Hey Guys and gals - been a while since I've been by - glad to see the place is still running! :) Got a question for the guru's here. I have an '02 Merc 75hp that still has the oil injection. I am the 3rd owner of this boat and it's been well cared for. But I do know the motor is getting up there in age, and that it has a plastic drive gear for the oil pump. I have had some tell me remove it before it takes a dump on me - others say let it be. My thought is why does Merc make a block off kit if it's so reliable? Should I remove it now before it causes me grief - or let it be? I know there are some here that have a crap-ton more experience than I....

I was a guest on a boat when it went belly up on account of this. It was a Yamaha. The guy was going to try to repair it before the mechanic talked him out of it. Expensive lesson there somewhere. I know what I would do if it were mine........eliminate the worry.

I would leave it on that is a pretty decent system that works well. Main issue with the plastic gear Is if you overheat the motor.

For your peace of mind and wallet, can change the whole oil injection pump or just the plastic pinions if are available, pinions will surely wear with time and friction. Better is to count with automatic oi injection as will inject much less oil ratio when OB is at idle, more at medium range and lot more when at full throttle.

OTOH when mixing the usual 50:1 oil ratio, the OB will run under that fixed ratio throughout the whole throttle rpm range. At idle rpm plugs will be fouled much more if running for long hour periods than if counting with original variable oil injection system.

Happy Boating

Seeing as how the gear is original - and it did get warm on me once when it sucked up a load of sand when I ran through a sandbar...(stupid low lake levels)...I think I'll order a new gear and replace it.

What ??---Where do these stories come from ?--The plastic gear is on the crankshaft !----Motor must be torn down to replace that plastic gear !----The gear on the pump shaft can be replaced but it is metal !

The lower crank driven oil pumps rarely fail...that why there is only a oil level sensor and no rotational sensors. Most of the nightmare posts on the internet are V-6 oil/pump problems passed down to other models.
