To run the motor out of gas or not...that is the question.

So, my dad always taught me to run the gas out of the motor when I will not be using it for the rest of the day or longer. It almost became a contest at the end of a weekend or day of fishing to see who could pull the fuel line at just the right time to have it die as you coasted onto the trailer. So, all the experts what is the concensus on this and please explain why or why not in your response.

Normally you do not want to run out the fuel on a larger premix multi-cylinder motor, or an oil injected motor. That is because some carbs run out of premix fuel first and the ones with fuel force the others to cycle w/o oil, whcih can cause damage. On an oil injected motor, the carbs that run out of fuel first tend to fill with oil, making the motor hard to start.

That is what I was always told run it dry....maybe a better option would be to drain the carb once done.....makes sense is to keep the carbs from getting gunked from old fuel....now how to do that on an inboard ???

Running an outboard out of fuel at the end of each use is also running it out of oil. The first time it misses, is the time to shut it off.

I prefer just shutting off the motor and leave gas/oil in the carb and cylinders. My gas tank always contains a running portion of stabil which is approx 1/4 of recommended usage for storage + some carb cleaner also 1/4 recommended usage. This way carbs are always clean, and possible water is taken care of.
Never had any problem doing it that way.
