3. Wax doesn't do a thing to reduce the staining (tanic acid)of the hull. Still needs "washed" down with bottom cleaner twice a year

It doesn't eliminate the need for hull cleaner but it does reduce the frequency with which you need to use it. I went 2 years last time, and I'm a little anal about the boat so it stays pretty clean.

It's more worthwhile if you can pay a kid to do it. ;)

Finding wax that won't come off in a few days is the trick too. I have a stash of Meguairs #16 Hard Paste Wax that I know will last a few months but it's been outlawed. Once the govenment finds that a product works too well, they find a way to pass a law against it. I picked up the last of what they had at the local marine store a few years ago. What I do is use everyday wax for the first coat or two, then when it's cured, I use the #16 on top of it. What I like about #16 is it's formulated for high brilliance vs. most waxes have fillers and trade depth of shine over brilliance. On a color like white, there is not much depth no matter what you do, so a wax with brilliance is key.

If you are not familiar with proper detailing techniques, Meguairs has a free full day hands on class at their offices in Irvine, CA for clubs and sometimes it's open to non-clubs.
