When installing the outdrive, make sure the rubber seal does NOT get caught on the shift linkage.. (and tear). What will happen, is water will enter the bellows, rust your ujoints, ruin your gimbal bearing, etc.

:(

My boat is closed cooling, so the pump in the outdrive does nothing - has no tube to the engine, so I think it was literally pumping up my bellow.

-- Joe

Joe - your impeller is needed even though the cooling is closed. As Bondo says - it supplies water to the heat exchanger.

Over time there have been some systems with the pump on the engine front end (Volvo) instead of in the lower init but still - a pump is needed!

Remove the impeller and your engine will boil within a few minutes!

Even if the raw water pump is on the engine......isn't the water pump in the outdrive needed to cool the outdrive? I thought there were water passages in the outdrive for cooloing purposes.

Tony...don't confuse the water circulation pump on the front of the engine to the raw water pump, todays newer Merc's Bravo 3's and Volvo's have a belt driven pump mounted off to the side that replaces the pump that was in the drive. So there is still 2 pumps but both are inside on the engine.

Yes Bob, I understand that. The water pump I was talking about on the engine was the raw water pump with a pick-up through the hull.

Re: Todays tip!

The belt driven seawater pump picks water up from the sea water pickup on the keel.

The hose diameter is 1 1/4" marine water intake hose through a strained pickup. I have my doubts about the 5/8 hose used on the open cooled 4 cyl apps.

Yes the outdrive has a water pump in it. It pumps water up through the top, and out the back and nothing more. Its useless as far as engine cooling goes.

The MR260 closed cooling is identical to the bravo setup. If anyone would like a diagram, I'll scan the manual later.

-- Joe

Btw. my gimbal bearing is frozen in there pretty good. (rollers are not froze, bearing just dont wanna come out with the slide hammer).

Guess I'll be at this for a while.

-- Joe
