Toggle ignition switch?

1998 Wellcraft 240 SE with repower 5.7 liter GM normally aspirated. VP Cobra outdrive, I think Merc electronics on the engine. Got it used, replaced 5.7 with long block 2-3 years ago (frankenmotor?). It runs very well, but the keyed ignition switch plastic broke. I am able to start/run by pushing the plastic ignition switch together with key and turn it, while working throttle in neutral. But I really should replace the ignition switch. Thinking about a 3 way toggle (off, run, start) with a spring on the start position - instead of key. Any input, suggestions, experience with this appreciated.

Closest pic to ignition switch I could find. attached

The toggle will work, but could also be accidentally flipped (kids or other), and the key offers little theft protection. I would either replace the original key switch.

Maybe a single switch to turn it on, and another (push button or toggle) to crank the motor

Good suggestion, thanks. What is simple way to get something in there for the remainder of this season using the wires that go to the existing (keyed/cracked) switch?

The simplest way is to replace the switch. You could get a temporary switch from a parts store and order the correct one and install it later.

Red/Purple with switch to Purple (Turns power ON)

Use another wire and jump form Purple wire to a push button or momentary ON switch to the Yellow/Red (Cranks motor)

Thanks AD, I'll have to think which route I want to go.

Grub, thanks for the temp solution. Any specifics on a temporary/simple switch from auto parts store?

Why not just put a regular switch back in???? You could always do a On/off switch with a push
button start.....

Grub has the right idea, and also you don't need a marine key switch, its not located in the engine room. Go to any auto store and ask for a 3 position key switch. Also the only difference in marine is most have a rubber cap to keep moisture out and the store will probably have one of those also

Thanks legal, but is that for an outboard with push-in choke operated by ignition switch?

a lot of work to avoid spending $15 for a replacement switch.

last time I looked for a off, on, mom switch, the cost was about $30

Agree with Scott...just get a new replacement for your broken one. Why fool around and hassle with rigging something up?
If you don't want to deal with a key, just leave the key in it.

You also don't want a push button starter switch unless it is well protected from being pushed accidentally.
