Tohatsu 15 4 stroke any good for trolling?

Some time back, I rented a couple of outboards up in Northern Ontario that were both 15 hp 4 strokes. One was a Johnson, the other a Mercury and both were short shaft and mounted on identical 14 foot rentals. The Mercury was the superior of the 2 and it didn't need a trolling plate to keep the speed down, where the Johnson did. I really didn't like that trolling plate situation one bit and I want nothing to do with it what so ever.

Now, my question is: Will a Tohatsu need a trolling plate or can it idle down like the Mercury? I'm wondering this because I have an oportunity to get a great deal on a new Tohatsu.

Best regards,

Since the Mercury 20hp is built by Tohatsu and is the exact same motor as the Mercury, then I suspect it will perform exactly the same as the Merc you used.

It's 15hp, not 20. Besides, I thought Mercury was made by Yamaha.

The same applies, old Merc's were disguissed Yamaha's, but new ones are made by Tohatsu in Japan and exported for Merc/Mariner from low end to portable models.

Tohatsu makes all Mercs up to and including 30 hp. The 15/20 are the same block/frame family, with different induction systems. So yes, the Tohatsu will behave the same as the Merc, because it IS the same.

Thanks everyone for the great information! I didn't realize that Tohatsu made these engines for Mercury. So, I can only wonder why the Mercury is $700 more. My guess is it's simple marketing.

Thanks again and happy boating to all,

It's because Mercury black paint & decals are much more expensive than Tohatsu dark blue paint & decals :) Or the fact that Mercury spends mutil-millions in advertising, marketing, boat shows, tournament sponsorship, etc. and guess who ultimately pays for it?

As a Mercury dealer I can tell you that the Mercury is better than the Tohatsu because....Well for some reason:) Oh, That's right, it's because its Black. Seriously though, Mercury often runs a 5 year warranty versus the Tohatsu three year warranty. Other than that the price difference is due to exactly what TGuy said.
