Tohatsu 18hp Carb replacement?

I recently purchased a boat with an 18hp Tohatsu 2 cycle motor. The kind gentleman that I purchased it from said that despite the 9.9hp label and M9.9 metal plate it was really a 18hp. (Some of the lakes in my area had a 9.9hp restriction and relabeling was a way to run increased hp.) The motor ran for a short period when I purchased the boat in February, but was not used since. Of course the first time I put the muffs on before going out a few weeks ago the motor would only run for less than 30 seconds before it would quit. OK...tune-up time.

At the local authorized Tohatsu service shop, the mechanic agreed that the motor was a 18hp and that a simple tune-up was needed.

(I'll spare you the details of bad customer service for the 3 week delay and poor communication about the status of my motor.)

Today I stop in to see if I might get my motor back soon and find out that despite several cleaning attempts (something about ultrasonic cleaning) the carb wouldn't come clean (something about jets being really small) and I needed a new carb. OK...

I receive a call back later in the day explaining that Tohatsu no longer makes these carbs and I am out of options! "Come pick-up your boat and maybe you can find a used carb somewhere."

Help?

I do not believe that its possible to not be able to clean the carb, I think he is filling you with a load of BS.

Might be true....Depends on the model number of the engine. It is very rare to have to replace a carburetor. Correctly cleaning, and dong it more than once, is critical.

Im in the same situation. Although I may be able to save my carb, I can't find any gaskets for it. I need to replace them, their all dry rotted. I'm not sure of the year the motor is, but it think its a 96/97. Any ideas?
