Tohatsu 3.5hp 2-stroke V.S the Tohatsu 4hp 4-stroke?

Hi,<br /><br />I am interested in deciding between these two motor as my backup engine. My main motor is 2-stroke , so I like the idea that it would use similar gas mix. Could anyone please give me any advice, info or experiences on which is a better choice or if either would work for such purpose?

Some models of the 3.5 have only forward (always in gear), some have neutral and forward. None have reverse.<br /><br />The 4hp has F-N-and Reverse, and is a more "sustancial" motor, more sturdy, etc.<br /><br />More important, is the shaft length needed. Both only come in 15" shaft length according to my brochure. <br /><br />Edit: My mistake, they are available in 20 shaft also. Just hard to find the info in my brochure.<br /><br /><br />Double check that a 15" shaft will reach below the bottom of the hull, or all you will do is suck air and splacs water with your prop.

Both are available in 20" shaft. The 3.5 only has a built in fuel tank. The 4 comes with a built in tank, but has a fuel fitting so that you can run it off of a remote tank. Both sizes are available under three different labels( Tohatsu, Nissan and Mercury) at three different prices.

A 3.5 or a 4 hp would be good choices only for a small boat in my view - say a light 15' tinny. They will push larger boats but don't have the guts in any kind of wind condition.
