Seafever was broken down on a mooring in NYC and had to be moved over 12 miles to Glen Cove

Having only a 4Hp outboard to work with ,which was good becasue it was a PITA hanging it off the back of a 29' boat

SO we did really not know what to expect BUT it moved a 29' 8000# boat with a dirty bottom and a fixed two blade prop at 4.5 knots

That's a good result. I might have expected 4K or so; To get up to 4.5 is very good indeed. Must have been a calm day.

I spec Tohatsu/Solas HT props for the 4/5/6, 8/9.8, and 15 frequently for sailboats (mine included), and have had good results. My 8,000 pound sailboat uses a 9.8 with HT prop, and I make 5K all the time.

It's surprising that the stainless swim ladder didn't distort too much under the thrust from that rig.

That propeller is not offered by SOLAS and is made by Tohatsu....

When you pushed that 29" heavy sail boat with that engine, what throttle amount were you using ?

We are using Standard Tohatsu's 3.5 long shaft to push J-24 sail boats. Would it be advisable to use max 3/4 throttle on calm waters to push haevy sailboats regardless of the engine being used ? Please advise.

funny because i have a J24 :) and that is the motor i used to move the CAL

The stock 7" prop moved the J24 at 6 knots at just above 1/2 throttle and in fact there was no more performance when i had a 6 hp Johnson

The 5.9 high trust is amazing and allows the motor to reach far more RPM and looks nothing like the 7" prop

It was almost like a jet drive the motor spun up and a few seconds later the Cal started moving and took about 1 minute to reach 4.5 knots

So 1/2 to 3/4 throttle would be the way to go with a Tohatsu 3.5 HP pushing a J-24 sailboat with a standard factory delivered prop, right ?

I think stock would work BUT if they make and HT prop fro the 3.5 it would be far better as the motor could reach its proper RPM

No high thrust prop available, but, switching over to the aluminum prop would be better than using one of the standard plastic props. The aluminum prop would be less successible to deformation from water resistance.
