Tohatsu 6HP warm start issues...

I purchased my first Outboard recently-its a Tohatsu 6hp 4 Stroke (year 2011) with an external tank only. I have had an issue with it that I hope I can get some guidance on:

The person I purchased it from told me he hadn't been very disciplined about keeping the carb clean - he didn't always run the engine dry or drain the carb bowl etc. Before I took it out I unscrewed the drain plug on the carb and a very strong varnish smell came out so I took the carb off and cleaned it with Seafoam. The carb was actually very clean and the only varnishing was on the bottom of the carb's fuel bowl. Everything else was clean so I didn't take the float out - most I did was unscrew the jets that were easily accessible and blow Seafoam generously into all the holes and vents. I went back and forth with compressed air and the Seafoam but as I said, with the exception of the bowl the carb was very clean.

I took the motor out and it started first pull and off we went for a boat ride on the Fraser river. After about 30 minutes of boating we stopped and went for some ice cream. When I got back about 30 minutes later, I hopped in the boat, opened the choke, pulled the chord and to my surprise it wouldn't start. Tried again and it was no go - again and again. I tried closing the choke, half opening the choke, re-priming etc, but still it wouldn't start.

The realization that I may have to row 3 miles back home was beging to descend on me when I got the idea to unhook the external gas hose. I did this and tried starting again and it started.... so I plugged the hose back in and headed home. On the way home I stopeed a few times and turned the engine off to see if it would start and every time it started fine.

Can anyone please give me insite as to why maybe it wouldn't start after our ice cream break? DId I flood it? Should I not choke on a warm start and if I do will I flood the engine if flooding is indeed what happened? Thanks!

I don't know if this helps or not but I had a somewhat similar experience. I had a stall today when I was out. I was pulling away at the cord and thinking of dropping anchor as the tide was pretty swift.
I was thinking what could be wrong, what does an engine need.
Fuel
Air
Spark
The tank was full and the air bleed was open.
The line was intact, where was the squeeze bulb?...

Under my foot.....
Flattened....

Ahem....

I unhooked the fuel line at both ends, the bulb re-popped. I hooked it up, squeezed, pull and the motor sprung to life!

While my story is not as good as yours, I don't think you need to choke to restart, just set the throttle a bit above start (mine has a restart setting) and pull. I only use choke if it has not been started in at least 24 hours.

Hope this helps and good luck!

You would only need to choke the engine after hours of it sitting. Chances are you just flooded it...

Thanks - so using the choke when not needed can flood the engine?

No choke needed if starting engine when stopped for short time periods. Unless you are boating in very cold environments and engine cools down fast. For re starts align throttle grip in between idle mark and starting marks, if engine doesn't start first or second pull, align grip to starting marks or slight passing them. Choking engine in excess will definitely flood the engine..

happy Boating

I have the 2013 model of the same motor. It definitely sounds flooded. Warm or hot 4 strokes in general like a little throttle and no choke to start. Next time, try cracking the throttle open about 1/8 . Also if your float is sticking and the gas tank vent was closed, or the tank was higher than the motor, then that could also contribute to flooding. Enjoy the motor. I have about 20 hours on mine so far. Compared to my OLD 2-stroke, this one shakes a lot more and is louder, but sips gas, idles reliably and starts reliably. Sometimes you do have to pull the rope like you really mean it, but so far it has always started. :)

And the other day we were zipping along at almost full throttle when suddenly the engine died. It started right up though right away on first pull so off we went. Not sure what happend buy my guess is it suddenly didn't get fuel so maybe a bubble in the gas line or something....?

That part is not normal but certainly could be fuel related. Did it slow down gradually like it was turned off,or stop suddenly like it suddenly locked up? The manual recommends a new water pump yearly, it might not be a bad idea to replace it now. It should be an easy job. I doubt an air bubble would cause the problem, but possibly a stuck float or air leak.

Hi
We had just put a new impeller put in a few days prior by a professional and had a thorough tune up done. It did not slow down at all - just came to an abrupt stop. And it started again with no problems. Hasn't happened again but Ive only used it once since then. Im heading out for 3 days of fishing so I hope it will be ok...

Beware...There is nothing to "tune up" on one of those.

Your response seem ominous...;-). I have my trusty Minn Kota and 27 Battery in case something goes wrong.

It's more of a warning about what someone claims they did:)

Yep. Annual service would include changing crankcase oil and LU lube, checking wp/cooling system operation and spark plug, etc. Not much to "tune" on the MFS 4/5/6.
