My dad has a tohatsu 50. We have tried about everything to get this engine to run right. Compression is good. We have tore carbs down and soaked rebuilt and checked timing. We appear to have good spark. We thought we had found the problem when we noticed these little rubber grommets that go in the carb. Not sure what they are for but they did not fix the problem. I am not sure if we understand how to check or set the timing. It has a little miss and it pops once in awhile. When you put it in the water it starts good and idles ok but when you get into it seems to not get full power. It pulls ok the first time you open it up but about the time it planes out it seems to lose power. Im not sure what is wrong and neither does my dad. He actually backed it up to where we have a burn pile and said he was done with it. Please help.

The solution is pretty simple. You need to take it into someone who knows what they are doing. Neither you or your dad have the training to diagnose and correct the problem. That does not mean you are stupid...It just means that without the training you don't know what, how or where to look for the possible causes.

Ok thanks guru. Problem is no one near us will touch these engines. I have pretty good mechanical knowledge just not the corrrct tools to check electrical componets. Ive never really worked on outboards but am ase cert. in almost everything auto and diesel. Just dont understand it i guess. We also do have a manual.

What is your ZIP code? You can locate a dealer at http://www.tohatsu.com/dealersearch/index.html. Or, if you prefer to turn the wrenches yourself, use your Factory service manual (forget the aftermarket ones) as a guide. Before turning any wrenches, read through the section on timing and the section on carbs. If you are then confident in your skills, you can start into doing a proper repair. All the electrical parts on these motors are checked with a good-quality analog ohm meter. Based on the facts that 1- You did not understand the purpose of the rubber plugs in the carb (for example), and 2- You are unable to determine whether the timing is correct, and 3- You did not know what sort of meter to use... You may well be better off finding a qualified mechanic who understands how to setup and repair your motor.

First, whip out your copy of the Factory service manual, Part# 003-21036-1, $44.17, available from any dealer, including me.

Turn to the section on carbs. Check the height. It is seldom incorrect. If/when an all-plastic float needs adjustment, the actual problem is usually not the float, but rather the viton tip of the needle. That said, one can warm the plastic float arm to soften it, make the adjustment, and allow it to cool.

Ok so getting it narrowed down. It seems to be fouling plugs. Had it running and pulled #1 plug boot off and no change at all. Plugged 1 in and unplugged 2 and it died. So swaped plugs from 1-2 and 2-1. Then pulled the plug off 2 and no change pulled off 1 and died so put new plugs in(all 3) and ran great for just a minute then went back to a slight miss and 1 and 3 plugs looked wet and 2 looked good. What do you guys think. It seems like a fuel issue but maybe not?

Could be fuel or ignition. Pick one, and go through the troubleshooting, using your Factory service manual as a guide.
