Tohatsu questions

I am really sorry for the newbie questions...

I purchased a boat that has a 25 tiller on the stern that seems to be around a 2000 or '01 engine. The lower unit is leaking and has a gray oil mixture so I know what is getting into it somehow. I've read a ton or articles on it being the seals.

I don't mind doing the work myself and and pretty inclined in keeping this engine running top notch.

I looked all over the forums and could not find the seal kit, proper oils, and a good OEM manual. I know I need to know the engine model, and I will try and go get that and edit this post.

Thanks again for any help!

I am in the Orlando/Winter Garden area and if anyone knows a reputable supplier and or service dealer, that would be great!

EDIT: The engine has the model # M25C2 372. If anyone knows the year this engine is, that would be great... any other information, please let me know and I'll look on the engine. Thank you!

Re: Tohatsu questions

Year is unimportant for servicing... precise model/serial is everything. If you have a nostalgic curiosity about year, call Tohatsu at 214-420-6440 and they may be able to look it up for you. The C2 was from the mid-90's.

The proper oil is any good TCW-3, mixed at a ratio of 50:1 with fuel of at least 87 octane. The correct LU lube is any good Hypoid gear lube, about SAE 90. Do not use Type C lube.

The correct Factory service manual is Part # 003-21035-1, $44.17, available from any dealer, including me.

The seal set for your motor is 346873216M LOWER UNIT GASKET SET $28.97, available from any dealer, including me.

You can DL an owner's manual from http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/manuals.html

You can locate local dealers at http://www.tohatsu.com/dealersearch/index.html

Re: Tohatsu questions

Thank you for your response.

I am learning that the boat is over powered and I believe I need to change the engine to something smaller like a 12.5 or 15. If I decide to keep the engine and get a different boat, I will purchase the neal seals and manual from you..

Thanks again!

Re: Tohatsu questions

The Serial is 49851. I tried calling Tohatsu when I got home to see the Serial number, but they were closed. Does anyone have a reference guide they can look through real fast to see the year?

Re: Tohatsu questions

Tohatsu America is open during normal business hours, Central time. They may or may not have records of that model in that vintage. They are your best resource to satisfy your nostalgic curiosity. Again, year means nothing to a servicing technician. Model/serial is what you want. And... in a motor of that vintage, year is far and a way second to condition when determining resale value.
