Can anyone give me any contacts for buying tohatsu spares in the uk

My 25hp 2 stroke year 2000 tohatsu died on sat whilst out on the estuary. Turns out no spark was getting to the plugs so i was thinking i would need to replace the coil and/or cd unit.

After closer inspection it turned out to be a break in all the wires from the magneto where the retaining clip holds them, it had worn through the loom as you accelerate the magneto advances the timing and the loom moves and had got worn through.

I crimped some inline connectors on the wires and its fine now but would like to get hold of some spares incase or at least know where to start when it comes to purchasing them.

Also, any Mercury dealer...That engine is sold under the Mercury label outside of the U.S. market.

thanks for the info

i looked at some mariners and they are identical under the hood to my tohatsu.
Did tohatsu make them for mariner or the other way round?
Mariner were made by yamaha for a while i believe so do they always get someone else to make their engines?

Tohatsu has made a variety of Mercury/Mariner engines for 20 years.

Back in the day the yamaha and mariner motors were exactly the same up until 60hp, I still have some of those motors 5hp, 15hp, 55hp and 60hp hammerhead - never say die motors .... but especially in UK I have seen the 50hp tohatsu rebranded as Mariner ....

In some markets Mercury re-brands the 40 and 50 carbed model as "Mercury Lightning" models. Also, there is a UK company that buys DFI Tohatsu's under the Mercury label and then converts them to multi fuel use for military/secret squirrel use.

Hey all

Here are some pics of the damage to my wiring loom and the repair i made once using crimping connectors to re attach the wires.

Might be worth all mariner/mercury/tohatsu owners to check their looms before they get stranded at sea!!

I made a small bracket attached to one side of the thermostat, covered in pipe so that the loom can move freely and not get caught, which was putting pressure on the loom at the magneto end clamp.

Nice solution, but you are missing a second factory clamp located at the engine head, At idle, both clamps must be tight to avoid side wire package slack, check pics. Original clamp code is : 309-06972-0

The joint venture between Tohatsu and Brunswick Corp which manufactures Mariner and Mercury started in 1988.

Thanks for the pics and info.
Just wondering if the previous owner had replaced the thermostat or removed it and left the clamp off?
The engine was originally from Australia then imported here to the guy i bought it off so doubt the thermostat was removed in oz to help the engine warm up quicker.

Suerly with both clamps on the loom must get a bend in one spot when using the throttle as the loom has no where to move and will bend somewhere?

i would imagine that any continous bend in the wires will weaken them over time.

I found out its not possible to buy the loom form the magneto on its own, you have to buy the whole magneto coil with the wires at a cost of ?218 + tax at 17.5% in the uk!!

Glad my broken wires were just long enough to get the crimp connectors on!

With both clamps factory delivered the bend will be in between formed middle loop, small enough at idle to 1/2 throttle, bit larger as you increase speed, anyway will have years of trouble free operation. Have engines with more than 2.5 K hours on them with no electrical wiring issues whatsoever. It's preferible for the internal cables to break in middle loop than next to coils. Expensive UK coils, both just 175 $ and with 19 vat included down here.

Check if thermostat is inside head, not a good idea to remove specially if using engine in cold water environments, as head temperature will take more time to rise for engine to perform as expected.

Thanks for the info.

I thought the problem had been solved but i took the engine out yesterday and it started but when pulling away it was spluttering and not running smoothly.
She wouldn't even push the boat at more than idle.
It was very jerky when idling and the engine would sort of kick/vibrate sideways quite badly.

In the end i changed engines as have an old 1985 evinrude that is in good condition.

I changed one of the spark plugs when home and it ran smoother but until pushing a boat its hard to tell. The spark plug that i thought was suspect i put in the 1985 evinrude and it ran no problem with it in.

I pulled the plug lead off the plug while the tohatsu was idling (not supposed to i know) and i got a big shock from the lead.
Didnt get a shock from the evinrude when i did that?

Would my wiring loom break from the magneto coil last week have killed any other electrical components?
How do i test the coils and the CDI box?

might have to start a new thread for this one!
