Tohatsu tach Not working!

The motor is a 2007 Tohatsu 30hp.
This is a friends boat and I am trying to help him out.
The oil light self checks, and the backlight works but the tach does not move. I checked all the connections and they are all clean and tight.
Two things that I noticed when looking at the boat were that he had sprayed the entire boat down and somehow got the entire underside of the dash wet. Could he have shorted something out? And he also messed up the firing order and ran it for a few minutes (Amazingly it ran extremely well on one cylinder)! Could he have fried the rectifier or something else by doing this?
Thanks....

Anything is possible, he needs to take it into an authorized dealer and let them check the tach.

Re: Tohatsu tach Not working!

Most tach and trim guages and other electronic parts don't fail because they get wet, hot or treated poorly. Connections can be an issue, but not often. However, I gave up on Tohatsu trim guages, and keep a spare tach in a repair kit, and from experience I expect both to fail. The problem with the Tohatsu is that all the feed back circuits from the engine sensors go through that tack, it is essential for the CPU, and the throttle position sensor that the tack works, so if it gives you trouble, buy a new one. Or get rid of the Tohatsu.

I got a flat tire on a one year old car. I should get rid of the car due to logic like this. Bashing a product at every opportunity does little except prove malice.

The guages fail, no problem, buy new ones. The motors fail, so you end up with spare guages.

The amazing things about the guages ithat I have had is there is no recognizable pattern to all the erratic behavior, they may be indicating an unhappy motor, or a particular setting, or they just may twich once in a while, and they cost a lot, which is why the dealers like them I think.

I didn't know Tohatsus came with tires, good idea, that way you can wheel the dead motors around. Cheers.

The Tohatsu charging system are so inconsistant on there voltage output that it could have fried the Tach, The Tachs on sevrel of the Tohatsus i have had would go up to 5000RPM at Idel and then hit the stop at 7000RPM once the engine was reved up a bit. Tohatsu had a special voltage regulator they sold me to corect the problem that went between the Tach and motor.

That's really interesting...Do you have the part number of this special regulator? The reason I ask is that Tohatsu does not sell anything to the public as they only sell through their dealers. There has never been a systemic problem with their tachs either. The only thing we ever have seen was a fluctuation on some 90 hp engines years ago due to CDI frequency interference that was solved by updating the CDI module.
