Hi all,

I have a 4.5 Hp outboard motor and would like to know if some one can tell me what the small tube is for on the exhaust pipe ?
It is connected to the exhaust pipe and goes to the lower crankshaft. On my motor this exhaust pipe has been rebuilt by some one I don't know. This exhaust pipe is made into 2 chambers. One for the exhaust and the other has no opening except going to the small tube.Have included photo of the original exhaust. As I have spent many hours bringing the motor up to a working condition and before I put it on the boat in real water conditions I want to make sure that all is Ok.It was suggested that this second chamber was to cool down the exhaust pipe but because it was custom made maybe there should be a hole in the 2nd chamber to allow air to travel through it to the crank case. Please help me if you can!

Hope somebody can help

Is the powerhead water cooled?
Unfortunately your pic doesn't inlarge for me.If the exhaust does indeed go through it to the leg I would assume the small pipe is for water to cool the leg. The leg would get very very hot without water to cool it.
The Eska and Clinton air cooled motors all use a pump for water to cool the leg. Some have a tube that directs water to the leg with the prop wash.

Thank you for your reply "Steelspike" yes the motor is air cooled and I had a quick look at the bottom of the leg and water is pushed up a small tube whichs runs up inside the leg to the bottom of the crankshaft where this small tube enters from the exhaust.
Sorry about the photo but it is the only one I have which I got from a compay http://www.tomos-autousluga.hr/ I have asked them to send a new part to me but the answer was :

We are very sorry, but for the moment we are not able to send a parts out of Croatia because of the teribble postage costs and duty(custom office). Also the exportation is very difficult for us.
Best regards.

So you can see how difficult it is.I will send photos of the crankcase as soon as I am able to show you.

Once again Thank you so much for your reply.

No John; haven't done any square rigged sailing though I have been boating since before I was 6.Was given my own boat at 6.A 10 ft Sharpie with a 1 1/2 hp Evinrude.Name is just one I thought up.
Can't you use the piece you have?Rig it up somehow? It would seem it is to introduce water into the exhaust. Is there a problem connecting it?
