Tonneau covers

I have a '98 Dodge Ram Quad cab shortbed and recently removed my Snug-Top one piece fiberglass hinged tonneau cover and sold it. It was too much trouble and too heavy to remove by myself to haul tall things in the bed of the truck. I miss having the cover to keep things somewhat dry and not having things blow out withing tying them down. Does anybody have any recommendations for a decent quality rigid folding tonneau cover?

I can't reccommend a hard top but I have a Berlin soft cover that also pops up. it is a breeze to remove if I have to carry something tall. I like it but isn't as secure as a hard top.

If you want a rollup tonnue, i've been advised to buy a velcro sided one with the fold down spap in the rear. The reason is that with the button style after some time of use it will shrink in size and be much more difficult to snap. I learned this from an insurance man that has had both styles. How tight do the soft ones stay? How do they behave on the freeway at speeds above 80 MPH? Are they noisy with the wind passing over them? How long do they last in the weather?

The Extang has 4 bows to support the cover they have NO problem with 12" of wet Snow

It is really tight you need to install the bows after you snap it on and do NOT remove it in the winter if the SUN is not OUT

Mine is 4 years old outside 24/7 and just showing mild wear with 62000 miles of driving

I spend a lot of time at 70 MPH and there is a LOW pressure zone right behind the cab and a HIGH pressure zone at the TAIL

It keeps the cargo amazingly DRY

Ditto on the Extang. They stay tight and snow is no problem. Mine has not faded on my Dodge in 3 years and still looks and works like new...

I have a fold-a-cover (http://foldacover.com/) on my 2006 Ram 1500 and love it. It lets you lock it up and can very easily be completely removed for hauling items where you need the entire length of the bed.

My dad and I both purchased an extang soft cover several years ago for our trucks. It was an excellent product. The cover on my truck stayed great for 3 years(sold the truck). The cover on my dads truck lasted over 100,000 thousand miles(about 11 yrs) before it finally had a hole worn through it. My Grandpa bought a cover from a different manufacturer around the same time and his didn't last near as long. We all had the snap on style. They seem more sturdy to me, I would think the velcro would become weak after a time. The only complaint any of us had was installation of the cover when cold, it was very difficult to get stretched back on, but 20 minutes in a heated garage quickly remedied that problem.

I put one of these on my Dodge..Its called a RollNLock.By far its one of the best i have ever had on a truck. Its semi Rigid, made of Alum., it doesnt take up much room in the bed (maybe 1 ft wide by 1ft deep when rolled up). Its also water tight, even has drain holes that drop thru the bed. It is lockable and very secure..even prevents the tailgate from opening when locked. It states that you shouldnt stand on it, but it holds my 6 y.o. son.
I installed mine with no instructions in less than an hour. The cool thing is its all clamped onto the sides of the bed, with no holes to drill at all!!!! Its kinda pricey but in my opinion, its WELL worth it. Dave

I have the flold-a-cover on my GMC Sierra and I love it. I'm a contractor and can carry tools and materials keeping them dry and able to lock. It's also nice for carrying golf clubs and stuff to the cottage.

Hey, I just checked those out. Pretty cool! They've got several models to choose from. It looks like their design has overcame the negative aspects of a soft cover.
