Re: Too Close for Comfort

I boat in a river that is integrated and segregated at the same time.

It is used by racing skulls with less than 2in of freeboard, up to barges and hotel ships several football fields long, and everything in between.

The PWC are limited to a certain section of the river, as are the wakeboarders and skiers.

These two groups along with the sailboats, are the most friendly of them all. We often go to and through these sections just to watch, almost everyone of them will slow down and talk to us, when we are there. We watch out for them when they are in the water, slow down, and they do the same for us. We do take a little water sometimes from the bigger faster wakeboards, but that is OK because they are not doing it on purpose, and it is their section of the river. We just laugh and they wave and say sorry. No problem there.

The PWC always give us room and they don't make wakes.

The speed boats that pass, when one at a time, also never cause problems. Six at a time running full speed together do, but they are just having fun. Can't blame them for that. They generally give us plenty of room, and the inflatable can take some pretty big waves before flipping. We do get wet, but we are the smallest on the river. Don't really get mad about that either.

Commercial, barges, and the Hotel Ships have professional captains and they are the best of them all. No problem there, just have to be aware of their presence. They have little room to maneuver, and it takes them a long time to slow down.

We have the best relationship with the wakeboarders and the sailboats. We see them out when the weather is nasty, they are the hardcores, and after a summer of nasty weather, we all know who is who. Rain or shine. We always stop, as do they, to ***** about the weather, and then have a good laugh about us all being crazy nuts for being out in it.

The problem boats all seem to come from one place, downtown Frankfurt. Big new cruisers & large speedboats, they seem to think they own the river. It seems to be a sport for them, to clear the river of everyone, less than them. We went this summer, occasionally to some of their regattas. We were invited through my business connections here.

To here them talk when among themselves, was enough to make you want to puke. What a bunch of arrogant, ignorant, group of *$$****$.

It would be easy for us to belong to this group (even without the proper boat), and they seemed to be upset that I said I didn't want to join. They acted like I insulted them for not jumping at the chance, to join their little elite snobby group.

These aren't the young that are doing this here, they are few and far between, generally very friendly, and worried about doing something wrong.

It is also not the seasoned, they are great, lots of experience, and always ready to help.

It is the middle aged, new to boating business professionals from the city center. They seem to believe, that like the rest of the world, the river belongs to them. They join their little yacht clubs, drink too much, and spend hours cussing everyone that earns less than them. Then they go out & swamp boats, only to laugh and tell stories about it latter. I heard an ear full.

I just told a neighbor two weeks ago to go **** himself. I would not ever get on a boat with him again. He cut between a downed skier, and their boat, at WOT. The skier was a young girl, about 12. He thought it was funny.

He thought he was the new “King of the River”. I told him he was the “Scum of the Earth”. He didn't take it very well. I told the other boater, if he needed a witness, to come to where we launch, and I would be happy to be one.

My girlfriend laughed at our nieghbor on the way back to our boat, and said he must have a very tiny, short one, and that if he thought his new boat somehow made it longer, he is very wrong. His girlfriend (I can only describe her as looking like a ugly horse) didn't think it was funny, but she also didn't say a word.

Now we don't talk anymore. He is avoiding us. :D

Jerks!

Starting in 2009 all Canadians will need a licence to operate a boat, I don't think this guy will pass the test.

Anybody can pass that test. You can take it as many times as you like until you do pass it. They only charge you one fee for as many tries as it takes to pass.

Wow, I don't know what to say. I wasn't there and I want to find this guy and pop him one.

Ignorance and stupidity. I don't think I would have restrained myself to verbal confrontation. Good for you in that respect.

Sounds like an interesting place (read insane) place to boat.

Actually, right now on the lakes, most of the 12' boats out there have a couple of guys in them holding shotguns.

Hmmm . . . people always did seem to be a bit more courteous when I had an AR-15 or 12 gauge in the rear window gun rack of my little truck . . . never got cut off, never tailgated . . . time to invent the tinny gun rack . . .

But seriously . . .

On the roads, acts such as this are considered reckless driving or road rage. In social/domestic situations it?s called ?threatening and intimidating with the intent to terrify.? In our schools there is a national anti-bullying program. Is this really something that should go unpunished on our waterways? Should this be an act which just results in a warning the first time or should it enforced with fines and punishments, including the loss of privilege? I?m ranting now and will stop, but the imbalance seems unjust.

Of course, ideally, we would all have the respect for one another and display common courtesy to a degree that insures the government would not need to be involved . . .

The problem is that, on the water, there isn't a handy cop who can show up with his lights flashing...at least not a lot of the time. Even if you get the registration number and the cop shows up, if there was no damage or injury, it's just your word against the offender's. Another witness would help.

It's frustrating. There's just a tiny percentage of boaters who do stuff like this. Most boaters are just fine, even if they make mistakes out of lack of knowledge. It's those few who are taking their frustrations in other areas out on the water who are a real problem.

Alcohol also plays a role in many incidents, and a boat full of drunken guys in their 20s is always a little scary to me. Weekdays are usually pretty safe, in my experience. It's mostly anglers and a few folks towing their grandkids around on tubes.

I'm usually on the water by 7 AM and off the water by Noon, so I miss most everything except the other anglers, and they're mostly trying to figure out what I'm doing to catch so many fish. Either that, or I'm trying to figure out what they're doing.

There's one deal at my favorite lake that an early morning weekday fisherman has to watch out for, though. One of the guys who owns a big house on the lake has a float plane tied up to his dock. He leaves for work in it every morning about 8 AM. It's best to stay out of the channel he uses for takeoffs around that time. He's pretty cool, but I don't want to be anywhere near a float plane in my boat. :D

Re: Too Close for Comfort

We will see hundreds of boats on a busy holiday weekend, all sharing a long skinny piece of water, and 98% of these people are nice, friendly, helpful people. Good folks of all walks of life who go out of their way to provide help when needed to other boaters, and a smile and a wave when not. :)

It is a real shame that a few don't feel the need to belong to this community of boaters. They insist they are above it, and the rules of the river don't apply to them. :(

thats a good idea with the paitball gun because if you miss the boat you wont hurt any one but them same assholes can get one and go around lighting the lake up

I do not understand people.A lot of people who go by when I am anchored fly by at 25-40 mph. As a former owner of a 12' tinny I can feel your pain as well. I cant believe he had the nerve to flip you the bird...

Re: Too Close for Comfort

When I had my small 14'er I used to deliberately get buzzed quite often by A%#^&oles in larger cruisers. Now I don't mean the occasional, ooops sorry about that kiind of waking, I mean going 1/4 mile or more out of their way to cause trouble. A rather malicious friend of mind came up with a nasty solution for these brain-dead idiots. Seems like a high powered wrist rocket type slingshot loaded with a 3/8" or 1/2" steel ball has the power to punch through several layers of fiberglass at close range. He would wait until the buzzing boat turned away exposing a section of the hull that's normally below the waterline and let fly.

Overreacting? I don't think so; as a sheriff that I know put it: "a 26+ ft boat heading right towards you at speed is a deadly weapon...I have no problem with somebody responding however they need to in self defense to remove themselves from that situation".

BTW, if any LEO types catch somebody going out their way to buzz or wake a small boat, they get arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

CAT, you're one of my favorite posters and I'm real sorry to hear of your close call. Whatever happened to Minnesota Nice?

I'm also guilty of not wearing my PFD all of the time (it's on when I'm alone and under way, but off when trolling or at anchor). Too bulky. Think I'll buy a couple of those inflatables as Xmas gifts to self and wife.:D

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, such incidents are rare, and Minnesota Nice is still in effect most of the time, at least on weekdays on smaller lakes.

I haven't thought of this until now. I recently acquired a nice supply of bottle rockets and waterproof fire crackers. Another idea on their usefullness.

I'd be pissed if that happened to me too.

Re: Too Close for Comfort

everyone should have a rear view of some kind. The simplest are the plastic ones sold to clip on a car visor so you can see your child in a car seat on the back seat. We are all in the habit of glancing at them and not at turning around periodically. All you need is something to see if someone's approaching. You can hook them anywhere and no loss if they break or fall over.
Your swimming ability has little to do with wearing a PFD, b/c if you find yourself suddenly swimming, it isn't b/c you chose to jump in. You're more likely to be fully clothed, stunned and possibly in cold water conditions. And for this reason have a swim platform, and/or practice one time climbing into your boat as if you fell over. (I know a guy who used his engine tilt to lift him up out of the water).
It's b/c of the knuckleheads that we who make no mistakes have to be careful.

Re: Too Close for Comfort

sorry to hear about this, but I have seen it too. A waterproof disposable camera velcroed to the dash is in my future.

Fighting back can lead to an escalation of the incident into something very nasty. Best to snap a picture, get the numbers or some other ID and let them go for the time being.

As a LEO friend of mine said The first rule in a gunfight is . . . don't be there

All I can say is .. nothing. I just don't understand what drives people to do that stuff. The thing is.. we're a world with laws to pretend we are 'civil', and there is just nothing we can do to stop people like that. The jerks of the world will never be punished enough to stop being jerks. There is too much to gain in their eyes.

What that guy saw as a reward for doing that is beyond me.. maybe his wife left him for a nicer person who owned a 14' aluminum..

I am glad that someone commented on the assualt with a deadly weapon. For that you don't need a cop as a witness. You can even make it stick without a witness. Besides, they will have to get a lawyer. That alone can be a big lesson. If this is a kid with daddy's boat, daddy will get smart a whole lot quicker when the cop shows up with a warrant.
