I have been reading this forum for about 6 months now and have learned quite a lot ? many thanks to those who have posed questions and especially to those that have posted replies. :)

My question has to do with hours on a boat and engine. I am in the market to purchase a new (or used) boat and I recently have heard that a colleague might be scaling up to a bigger boat and that their Crownline 180BR might be for sale (it?s a 2006 which they bought brand new). However if has 170 + hours on it so far. Should this be of any concern (i.e. too many hours?)

It all depends on how it was taken care of. By the owner? Marina? Ask lot's of question and have it surveyed.

Also, go over every inch of the bottom. Get down on your hands and knees, and crawl under there if you have to. A 2006 isn't old enough to have any major structural damage unless it was wrecked, but you want to make sure he didn't hit anything or run up on shore with it.

170+ hours on a year old boat is quite a concern for me, but may not be for others. I wonder how hard he ran it in that 170 hours, AND if he followed the proper break in procedure or kept it at wide open throttle (WOT) from the moment it got wet.

If he wants to sell it that bad I'm sure he would pay the $60 to have the engine 'scoped' and inspected. If the authorized dealer for that boat model does an inspection and says it's in good shape .... go for it.

If properly cared for 170 hours is hardly broken in.

Re: Too many hours?

I typically put 200 hours a year on my motors, and that is probably substantially above average.

Just to add a little more information - this is their second summer with the boat. I believe that most of the hours were in the first season (skiing and boarding with wetsuits in Feb. till late Oct. here in AR). This year, not so much.

Re: Too many hours?

Just to add in to my previous post. I think 170 hours on a 2 year old boat is too much simply because when I bought my '95 Skeeter a few months ago it only had 300 on her. :) The previous owner was an Air Force officer, and he barely had time to go out on the boat.
