Too may hours?

I'm considering buying a 96 32 ft Envision boat with twin 415 hp 502's. Boat is pristine but engines have 700 hours. Assuming they run well on sea trial and compression tests good how much risk would I have that these would need rebuilt in the next couple of seasons?

it will depend on how well it was maintained, how well will you maintain it and how many hours wil you put on it per season.

I think they have been well maintained. I typically put 40-50 hours per season on my boat.
The reason I posted the question was I had heard that the 502's on these go fast boats get pretty tired by 600-700 hours. Repowering would be an expensive deal on this rig.

A compression check will tell you a lot about the life of the engine. If the rings and valve seats are still tight you are pretty safe.

Definitely check the compression, but keep in mind that although 700 hrs is not ultra high the owner wasn't cruising around at 20 knots. this boat was made for speed and that has a large impact on the motors.

thats only 30 days worth of hours.compression test will give you a rough idea and if they've had regular servicing they will be lasting a lot longer.

Thanks for the advice all.. Turns out both engines failed compression test. Both had 3 cyls down in the 75-80 range. Was unable to work out new price. I guess I'm still in the boat shopping business.

Good for you. Its better to start a thread with this question rather than spending a ton of money and then coming on here and posting a question titled:

"830 HP and my boat only goes 20 MPH at full throttle."
