Too much oil going into motor

Have a 1992 Mercury 200hp carb motor with oil injection. It has been sitting for about a month or to. I had the hardest time getting it to start. Finally started and I have never seen so much smoke! Seems like it is getting way to much oil! The ground right under the exaust is black from all of the oil coming out of the exaust. The only way we got it started was to keep dumping raw gas in the carbs. I guess that helped lean the oil and thats why it was able to start. The longer it ran, the smoke got less but still smoked heavy.

I also noticed that the gas in the racor filter is green as if it has oil in it. What should I check? Thanks.

Re: Too much oil going into motor

There is likely a check valve in the injection system that is sticking open. As the gas in the carbs evaporates, the oil fills the carbs and filter. I would run it a while and see if it clears up on it's own. Also, if you plan to use it regularly, it may not be an issue. alternatively, look at the exploded parts diagrams on Crowleymarine.com and find the correct check valve and clean it or replace it.

make sure the pump linkage is working, and that the pump is not stuck wide open.

Re: Too much oil going into motor

The oil system is slightly presurized by a "check" valve on the engine. It should limit the pressure on the boat tank to a couple of pounds, and let it off a few minutes after the engine is shut down.

If it goes over pressure, or doesn't let off the pressure on shutdown (a common problem) the oil will slowly creep forward and overcome the fuel system.

Not a biggie, just check it out.

hope it helps

The below linked thread contains a long (way too long) thread on excessive smoke problems at startup and possible solutions (including replacement of some check valves on the oil injection system). If you patiently read through the entire thread, I think that you will learn plenty about how the oil injection system works and possible causes/solutions to a "too much oil" problem. Good luck.

Thanks! I read your original thread and your symptoms mirror mine. Once I shut off the motor for 15 to 20 minutes it is hard to start just as you described. I have to start it the same way that you did. Have to advance the throttle and let run for 15 to 20 seconds before it will idle like it should.

Unless I missed it, was the over pressurization your problem? Sounds like that will be my problem.

Well, at least you now know where to start looking. Those valves are cheap, so don't put it off. Until you cure the problem, blled the oil tank after you shut down.

As far as bleeding the tank, are you just talking about unscrewing the cap on the oil tank on the boat?

Yes, that what I am talking about.
