I have a 1993 Procraft Super 180 Bass Boat with an 82 200 hp Mercury on it. I believe I have a 25 pitch prop. WOT RPM's max at 5000. Is this too much prop for this boat?

Yes I have a jackplate, Please tell me how to measure how high the motor is and I will go measure it. The prop is a quicksilver Stainless Steel. WOT speed is about 55

I am about 45 minutes from tims, normandy is still free!!! Okay the captivation plate is approx 8 inches above the bottom of the hull. The jack plate sets the motor out 12" from the boat

At 8" above bottom and 12+ back, I'm assuming you have a low-water pick-up lower unit????
It should be getting much better than 55...I can get that with an old Rude 200 on an 18ft aluminum + about 5.
How are we gauging speed??? GPS? Pitot? speed wheel?

walleyehed, I don't have GPS, just the speedo on the dash, I just know the tach maxes out at about 5100 and the chimewalking begins, and yes I do have a low water pickup

OK, if you're not blowing out, let's raise the engine some and test...

Re: too much prop?

Prop is Quicksilver tempest 25P. Today I changed plugs just to make sure I got plenty of fire. I think I could have hit a few hundred more RPM's but again the chimewalkin begins. What is the easiest way to raise the engine? I do not have an angine hoist. I do have an inlaw that has a tractor with a boom on the front (I know, very redneck!!)

Ha,nothing wrong with rednecks :)Thats what the jacklates plate for, mine has 4 bolts on the side i loosen them and then theres a long thread rod with bolts on it ,i start tightening those nuts or loosing them and thats how it raises and lowers the motor, your raising and lowering rod is probably in the middle of the jackplate.

Re: too much prop?

I made 1/8"marks on mine.since your already 8"up i would raise it1/2"and see how it does, and then if it blowa out lower it an 1/8 and if it doesnt blow out raise it an 1/8".i know an 1/8"doesnt sound like much but it does make an entirely difference.

Re: too much prop?

today I raised the motor 1/4 inch. Hole shot sucks, handling seems a little better, no chimewalking, the boat porpuses when slowing down, and still WOT is around 5100 rpm. I guess I need a different prop. I currently have a 25P tempest. Not sure of diameter. How much of a change should I do to get the correct WOT rpms?

Re: too much prop?

Dia. on all large gearcase Tempests is 14-5/8"..
I hate to see adrop in pitch if we don't "have" too...You may be running into some issues with gearcase float, dig, dive and dart..it's right on/near the surface, and it may cause some handling issues. A Cresent nose piece may help, but we need to hear from Dhadley on that...

Re: too much prop?

After reading many posts on here, I was under the impression that my WOT being so low is what I should really be concerned with.

Re: too much prop?

Yes, it is... the problem lies in the fact you have in no-way maximized what you have, FIRST.
If you want to just start throwing props at it, go ahead...
You have issues with mounting heigth, and we need to figure out why that is, because the prop that works for 1 situation, will not work for the other.
As I said, let's see what Dhadley has to add and go from there...he's the Guru when it comes to setting these type of rigs up and nobody does it better, but it will likely be Monday before we hear from him.

Re: too much prop?

I would rather not start throwing props at it, $200-400 guesses is not how I would like to spend my summer off. Other than motor setup, is there anything that could be causing not reaching the correct RPM?
