I have a 79-80 merc 7.5. Will start with 4-6 pulls the runs good but stalls at idle. What can I do?(compression is also good)

Also, replaced pump 1 month ago. Little water comes out the tail tell. tried blowing through it ect. Still the same. The guy at the shop said That if it is not getting hot not to worry. It appears not to be getting hot. Is this o.k.?

Thanks.

Sorry I don't understand your problem. Is it poor idle or a heating problem? If you took it to a mechanic I assume that you paid for what he did. Seems he didn't doo a good job so take it back and tell him to make it right.

Both are a problem. Took the motor so he could check the pump that I changed. The tell water was weak so I assumed I did it wrong. I asked them to check the pump and "make sure it is running fine". I payed 84.00. He said all was o.k.

The motor is running just like it did when I took it in.

Thanks
sorry for the dbl post

Rookie, as I said on the other post, I don't think these engines have a t-stat. The engine should gain some heat at idle and more at higher rpm. I think sharkcat has the right answer....take it back.

I have a 7.5 about the same year. I installed a complete Merc waterpump kit, removed water cover on cylinders to check water passages. Tattle tale is still weak, and engine runs a little warm at idle. I think the problem is the water tube grommet under the powerhead. This engine also has 2 different sizes of driveshafts by a few thousands, which requires you match impeller to driveshaft, the one in the w/p kit is the larger one, and if you install it on the small drive shaft, water pressure bypasses between the impeller and shaft. Most likely cause of stalling at idle is idle jet and idle pqssage in carb, link/sync, and dont forget to check the black plastic venturie inside the carb throat, will not idle without this. No thermostat in the engine I have, but parts book shows one, I guess depends on year and model.
