Took the 85 Capri out today for the first time.

Took the 1985 1600 Capri Cuddy out to a local lake (big puddle actually, about 175 acres, average depth 6 feet) for a trial run. This is my impression of how the boat performed.

Boat was empty except for me, 5 gallons of gas and the battery. This little boat really was fun to drive! The lake was flat as a pancake, so the only waves were caused by other boats. I ran through their wake at 90 and 45 degree angles at full speed and the stepped V hull cut right through it. That made me really anxious to get it out on the bay and see how it handles rougher water conditions.

The 85 hp Force performed well, and the telltale I added was shooting a stream of water 8 feet behind me at WOT! I was glad to see the pump working well. Previous owners receipts indicate impeller was replaced in '02, so I guess its still pumping.

Top speed as recorded by the Pitot type speedo was 38mph. Boat gets on plane quickly and levels right off. The motor does not have power T/T, so I put the pin in the hole closest to the transom. Makes the boat ride very level. Was able to hold a plane as slow as 10-12 mph.

Turning was tight and didn't have a tendency to "slide out" under heavy throttle. I think the steering cable needs to be replaced because it is very hard to turn right, but easy to turn left, and there is play in the wheel.

One bad design was the swim platform/ladder. Its great to have, its all fiberglass and stainless, but right about the speed where the boat is getting up on plane, the brace for the ladder makes a huge splash that dumps buckets of water on the motor cover. Once on plane it is out of the water and no splash.

I ran the boat hard most of the time, and after about an hour of circling this little lake, the Force sucked up about 4 gallons! Holy moly! My 14' MFG with 40hp Johnson will run for hours on 4 gallons! I heard that Force motors were thirsty buggers. Guess I'm going to have to install a 14 gallon or larger permenant tank.

All in all, the boat really rode and handled really well. And the Force ran the whole time without a hickup.

So I am one happy camper. A few minor clean up items and I'll be taking to Long Island in two weeks for a nice two week vacation! Whoo Hoo!

put a new water pump impellar in it.And install a temperature guage on it,if you haven't already. Also run seafoam in the gas to clean fuel system and carbon. That motor will serve you well if taken care of.

You might consider moving the trim pin a hole or two. Should improve the top speed and, perhaps, the right turn steering force.

It will come up on plane a little later, but should make for less wetted hull and therefore less drag (if speed is what you want).

Do you have a hydrofoil on it? That seemed to make mine steer harder also, especially to the right. Virtually all here will recommend that you lose it if you do.

But, You've probably heard all of this before, lol.

Good Luck

Here ya go....

Hey Quad...

I should play around with the pin settings and see what it does. No foil on the motor. After playing around with the cable last night, I see that the cable will move a full 1/2" in/out at the motor end without the wheel turning. I know the helm is good and has no play to speak of. So i'm assuming the cable is starting to show some wear. There goes $120 bucks or so..... But hey, better safe than sorry, right?

Jaysam, Ya really think it needs a new impeller if it was replaced in 2002 and is working well?

Thanks for your responses!

Those systems usually have play in them. My Teleflex Saf-T has about an inch of play in the wheel out of the box. I liked the old Merc "ride guide" system it had before.

Mark42,

That looks like a really fun boat. Certainly don't see too many of them, and yours looks to be in great shape. I'd love to see some more pics of it, inside, outside, on water, on plane etc.

Thanks for sharing,

Re: Took the 85 Capri out today for the first time.

Looks good Mark, I am old displaced long islander living in Milford Pa now, spent many a day on the Great South Bay since I was a kid, nearby Robert Moses bridge, & state park, it can get real nasty sometimes.

A rule of thumb when setting up your motor (without that newfangled power trim,,, lol) Take a straightedge from the bottom of the boat to your cavitation plate, and make paralell (level) with it to begin with (or eyeball it), this is your best running point, (remember this setting) any further in will make your bow plow some (I'm amazed you got 38mph with your motor set this way?) it should even be faster now! Next you can try higher pin settings for even more speed, untill cavitation takes over, then whatever setting you experiment with up above level, make sure you don't get cavitation when turning, or it's back to the next lowest pin. Just a note here, if you live in NJ, and have done any boating, you should be familiar with seaweed, and what to do, right?

Good luck, and Happy Boating, Mike

By the way, if you're pumping water fine, don't worry about the impeller, even with alot of the edges worn off I've seen them work fine. But, if you get a warning buzzer from under the dash check to make sure there's no obstruction, and if there's none, then let it cool down till the buzzer stops, and limp home accordingly.

yes mark,If it were me I would replace the impellar, alot of people recommend replacing them after 2 years, yours is 5 years old.Rubber will certainly deteriorate after that long of time. And the first thing a new (old) boat owner should do is change the impellar. Those force engines got a bum rap from people who just didn't do simple maintenance. Can you for certain say that engine never got started without muffs being on.Like I said treat it right and it will serve you well.

I just figured you were going on vacation soon, and didn't have time to change the impeller, and check the thermostat, but if you do have the time, Do it.
