Re: Tool/Repair kits
I don't go on the river very often, since my boat is just a 12' aluminum one with a 6hp outboard. When I do, though, I take my handheld VHF radio and monitor the barge chatter channel. If I'm near a lock, I monitor the lock's channel. I really, really want to know where the barges are, since they throw a wake that could swamp my little boat if I was caught broadside. I know where all the daymarks are in my vicinity, and can anticipate the barges' movements.
I do boat on the St. Croix quite a bit, and it's the big cruisers that are the problem there. Some of them kick off a wake bigger than the barges. But, I just have to keep an eye open all the time for them on that river. It's pretty exciting, but the river fishing's worth it.
Thank goodness for my Johnson outboard, which always starts on half a pull after the first start of the day. When the traffic's really heavy on the river, I just leave it idling all the time when I'm drift fishing, so I can head into the wakes as they occur. Like I said...exciting at times.
