Unfortunately I dont have manuals for my outboard (an outboard 1994 225HP Evinrude, Model E225TXARK). Not easy to find in Venezuela, and in addition, the idiot president we have has a foreign exchange control and no dollars are available for the general public, and the credit cards with US$ capability have been suspended.

I haven't worked on that engine, but I inspect it everytime I can, and I follow maintenance routines religiously so I can keep my mechanic busy and my boat safe.

Now I would like to have a small toolbox onboard, for any emergency. Being an aviation mechanic I know something about what to carry in a toolbox, but I need advise in respect of my Evinrude 225. I even don't know if it uses metric or US nuts and bolts.

I tried searching the forums, but couldnt find a topic I saw sometime ago about "what do you have in your toolbox" or something like that...I know it was a good list of things to carry onboard.

I will be happy with any suggestions for my 225HP, and for general "must have" tools to carry all the time. If you can also give me the link to the old topic I mentioned I will be grateful.

Thanks.

Re: Toolbox for Evinrude 225 and Boat

Oh, I forgot to mention, sometime ago I had a spun prop. A friend gave me a hand pulling my boat to a near beach with his boat, and as I have a spare prop onboard, we were able to replace it and enjoy the full day at the beach. We used a nice big socket he had for propeller nut. Do you know the size??? I would like to buy one and have it in my toolbox. Anyways I think the nut was not that tight, so maybe I can take it out with a plier...but I would like to have the socket anyways.

What an opportunity. Filling someone elses toolbox.
All bolts and nuts on your engine are US.
Needlenose pliers
Channelock pliers
Regular wire pliers
Side cutters
1-1/16" socket (prop nut)
13/16" deepbarrel socket (sparkplugs)
Rachet or breakover handle
4 in 1 screwdriver
Crescent wrench
3/8 X 7/16 end wrench
1/2 X 9/16 " " "
5/8 X 11/16 " " "
Hammer
Can opener
Swiss Army Knife
Electrical tape
Duct tape
JB Weld

I'm sure there is more that should be in there, but this is just basic stuff I came up with. Keep this post close to the top. Someone else will have some good ideas.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

I would add three other items that I feel are crucial. 1)Plastic pliers so you can pull plug wires while the engine is running and you do not get shocked 2) Make a small remote starter out of a switch and 2 feet of wire 3)Compression gauge this you can seperate into two pieces in your box. This will let you know if a head gasket is blown or your engine is toast.

Thanks Roscoe !

Lol, I was pulling the leg of my boat partner (we go 50/50 on all expenses related to the boat) and told him this morning:

" hey, guess what? I posted a question on the internet boating forum I've mentioned other times, to get a list of the common tools we need onboard. That's a great place to get advise! I already received some feedback, so I started to buy the recommended stuff... Whad did you buy?, he asked... Let me see, hmmm, here's what I remember:

- electric arch iron soldering machine
- circular saw, 22 inches diameter
- pneumatic hammer
- air compressor
- ...
- etc...."

lmao
