Re: Toon's rear sits too deep

Bob,
Assuming you're running a 2:1 gear ratio, we're both running about 35% slip. If you are running round logs & as you state, three tubes, you sit high in the back. your more effiecient hull would (may?) account for the greater speed. Thus, my original question. "How can I add flotation?"
I am looking for a third log. I'm currently putting together a light steel frame that I can sheath in plywood to to see what effect it has & if I should continue my search for the elusive single log unicorn or just get rid of this boat & start over.

I'd hate to do that as this has been a three year learning experience that took a rotting corpse back to a, more often than not, enjoyable boat.

I'm at 2.33:1 gear ratio, so I'm at 28% slip. Not real happy with that.

Yeah, Lots of drag on a toon hull. You mentioned only getting 90 - 95 out of your 115 at your altitude. What would that be? I'm between 4000 & 5000 feet, myself.
I'll be @ 480 ft this weekend I'll check speeds there.

Oh & your motor's a year old, mines pushing 24. There may be some speed explanations there, as well. I haven't DYNO'ed my motor but justoff hand, didn't they derate outboards down back in the late 90's? I'm probably running something closer to 110- 100 by today's standards.

You just don't have the flotation you need for that size and wight of motor . you probably don't have water logged foam ether, the foam blocks are just that "foam blocks" as they are flat on the bottom and and only go as far down as the radius will let them, mine sit 9" off the bottom (I opened up my logs and checked)
If you are set on keeping that boat a third log is the way to go

You mention the motor is oversized for the boat....you are ok with creating an unsafe situation?

I have a 110 on back of my 1986 Bass Tracker 20' & it does sit a bit low in the rear but i've noticed many times not as low as most of the other 'toon rigs i see out there---I still have about a third of the rear of my toon above water sitting still- I don't worry about it-
-------
wgl333, please stay on topic --you have NO idea how his rig or my "oversize" rig is set up--

125 on a twenty footer should get you a lot more than that. Have you weighed your rig?

Very true- I have a 110 on my 20' with a 17 pitched prop---
30 mph is no sweat on calm water-

That does NOT seem right! I've got a 24' tritoon that weighs 3,000 pounds, and I'm getting 23-24 MPG (GPS) at 6,000 RPM using a 13.75 Dia X 13 pitch prop on my 115 - which only puts out about 90-95 HP at the elevations I run.

3,000 lbs is a bit heavy for a 24'...right? My 24' with everything minus motor and seats was 1,600 at the scales

BH,
What's the diameter of your logs. I'm beginning to think that's the key. I can't run a prop any more than 13". Probably no more than the 11" pitch I have on now.

Per specs my dry weight should be 1510. I've replaced the original 5/8" floor w/ 3/4". Plus my live well & big cooler for another 200 - 250 & 300# for the motor I should be almost 3K fully loaded & crewed for fishing. I'll try to get her on a scale soon.

I live at 9,000 and boat anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 feet. That means I'm underpropped at 4,400, where I'll be on Sunday, but overpropped at really high elevations, like Turquoise Lake, in Leadville, CO - elevation 10,000

I think it was only 2,200 before adding the third toon, which took it up to 3,000. That Merc 115 4-stroke weighs 399 pounds all by itself!

Logs are 21" - About all i have in back is 12 gal of gas max, one starting battery & a cooler thats used as a live well when we decide to keep a few fish--Oh yeah- a potty for the wife

Re: Toon's rear sits too deep

Well, I'll be back in a week. Going to Havasu for the holdiay. I'll see what the motor does closer to sea level & try to get weighed on the way out.

I was thinking of filling my motor pod w/ foam, It should give me about 60lbs of bouyancy. Any thoughts?

Good Luck at Havasu! We just took our boat out of the water, looks to be a very busy day on the River / Lake. All the good beaches were 'spoken for' with easy ups and anchor buoys. We may take the SeaDoo's out for a put this afternoon, but lots of boats means lots of chop. You start to get really jaded when you are here on week days.

Interesting thought & hope to hear others thoughts & or experience-- Only thing is covering up the motor mounting bolts?
Guess you could "dam" a few inches to have access to them?

Re: Toon's rear sits too deep

Hey everyboby! Just got back from Havasu & had a GREAT time! Tried a new prop, found a motor issue I didn't know I had. First trip out with underskinning. WORTH EVERY PENNY. Ran a 100 mile side trip & picked up a single, reasonably priced log. More tomorrow & during the week. I just wanted to stop in and say Hi!
I'm going to bed.

Re: Toon's rear sits too deep

Got some rest went to work today now I'm back to talk boats! Ha!
I han't mentioned before, I decided to install the underskin material I bought 6 months ago before my lake trip. If anyboby out here is on the fence about underskin... jump off!. Didn't do much for speed that I could tell but the ride comfort improved tremendously.

The motor issue I mentioned was not being able to run WOT. I could cruise @ 4800 all day so tat's what I did. Thepro is a plastic composite with an 11" pitch.Went lasc 'ause i was he only one I could find in 11 to fit my motor & I'm glad I did. Havasu is shallow on the AZ side & rocky on both sides. Last years alum prop got turned into a twisted mess that almost did't get me back to camp. Thi plastic got worn pretty well but its still straight.
