I have 1975 50Hp. Evinrude outboard that is in need of a top end rebuild. I have some knowledge but I'm no expert. Will a manual and a very limited tool box get the job done or should I bite the bullet and take it to a certified mechanic?. What should I expect it to cost either way. Thanks.

Ahoy, Rockfisher.

No wrench takes greater care with a job than the guy who owns the machine.

Get a factory manual.

You may need to buy a few tools, but the manual, tools, farmed out machine work and parts will cost you less than a shop rebuild.

Satisfaction? Priceless. :)

I am no expert by any means of the word, but I have rebuilt many engines, and all of them are still running. You will need a Factory Repair Manual, not a regular manual like from seloc or what ever. You can get the manual from www.kencook.com . You might want to invest in a cylinder hone, or if you have never done this, take it somewhere, very cheap but can cost you a block if you dont do it right. Make sure you label everything, like these bolts go here, those go there, you get the idea. The hardest thing about rebuilding a motor is timing. The manual will tell you how to do this, but it is probably better to take it somewhere and have it done. Again another thing that is very cheap, but can cost you a motor if not done right.

To rebuild yourself you should expect to pay anywhere from 200.00 to 400.00 depending on parts and gaskets and what not.

If you take it somewhere, it will cost you anywhere from 45-65 dollars per hour plus all parts.

Take Pictures as you tear it down, you'll be glad you did when you go to re-assemble.
