Top secret new Yamaha 200hp 4 stroke 4 cyl?

Is there anyone out there that has heard about Yamaha coming out with a 200hp 4cyl 4 stroke motor? The motor would weigh in just about the same as a 200hp 2stroke V6 for the re-power market and hulls that don?t do well with all the extra weight of the big v6 4 stroke?

Anyone catch wind of this new motor?

Re: Top secret new Yamaha 200hp 4 stroke 4 cyl

I don't know anything about the yamaha, but Tohatsu released the following to it's dealers earlier this year about their new engine.

"Tohatsu Introduces Plans for New 351hp, Solar Powered Outboard!

Even though the sun is expected to burn out in approximately 20 billion years, Tohatsu has determined that solar powered outboards are a viable alternative to fossil fuels. And since other brands only offer a 350hp motor, Tohatsu will develop a 351hp motor. Tohatsu expects to have the model completed approximately 2 billion years before the sun burns out leaving plenty of time to gain full use of it. Even though completion is still a few years away, we decided April 1st would be the perfect time to tell you about it."

I suspect that a 4 cylinder 200 hp is in the same vein:)

Good PUNN, but Mercury Verado already has a 4 cyl, 4 stroke, 200HP on the market right now.

I was thinking in terms of a normal 4-stroke...But, I stand corrected.

Maybe not.
Let's do some math....
Who just came out with a 200 hp 4 cylinder ?
and who's in bed together ?

Re: Top secret new Yamaha 200hp 4 stroke 4 cyl

I?d love to see one produced.

Comparing ratios of HP produced per CC of displacement, (hp/cc), and HP produced per Lb of engine weight, (hp/lb), of some of the current higher HP outboards, some facts and possibilities are apparent.

Theoretically, a Yamaha 200 HP based on the 2670cc F150 block seems feasible given that it would need to produce 0.075 hp/cc, a ratio that is currently accomplished by the Yamaha F250. If this hypothetical engine weighed the same as the F150, it would achieve a commendable 0.43 hp/lb matching the Suzuki 250 SS and very close to the E-TEC 200.

Also apparent is that while the new Verado 200 has an excellent hp/cc ratio of 0.077, (matching the E-TEC 200), it?s heavy weight negates that advantage to below the normally aspirated 4-strokes at 0.31 hp/lb.

Yamaha F150 (L4) (2670cc) @ 466 lb = 0.056 hp/cc = 0.32 hp/lb
Yamaha F200 (V6) (3352cc) @ 583 lb = 0.060 hp/cc = 0.34 hp/lb
Yamaha F250 (V6) (3352cc) @ 604 lb = 0.075 hp/cc = 0.41 hp/lb

Hypothetical Yamaha F200 based of F150 L4 block
Yamaha F200 (L4) (2670cc) @ 466 lb = 0.075 hp/cc = 0.43 hp/lb

Verado 200 (L4) (2598cc) @ 635 lb = 0.077 hp/cc = 0.31 hp/lb
Suzuki 250 SS (V6) (4028cc) @ 578 lb = 0.062 hp/cc = 0.43 hp/lb
E-TEC 200 (V6) (2592cc) @ 433 lb = 0.077 hp/cc = 0.46 hp/lb

I think manufacturers will have lighter more powerful motors as time goes on.
The market is there.
The biggest problem with going 4-stroke is weight. On smaller boats, this is an issue.

I found this interesting though not an outboard it does show possibilities
from a small block. Subaru rally cars use a 122 cu in 300hp @ 5,500 with 480 ft lbs of torque at 3,000 rpm. Of course you have to wonder how long that little motor would last driven at that output.I find that torque amazing from that little block. especially when compared to the old Chevy 409 at 425 ft lbs.

200 HP out of the base F150? not out of the realm at all.
the longevity may be suspect.
pulling lots of poer out of a small package really isnt that hard. making it live a long happy life in the hands of a consumer that will ask about using 2 year old gas will be.
look at some of the formula 1 1.9L motors cranking out slightly over 600 HP.
wonder if they winterize or use fuel stabilizer?

When I bought my wife's Cavalier in 2003, the brochure had a 750 hp version - 2 Liter engine - same size as the Suburu. I'd love to have that in a hydroplane!

When we go back to work next week I will poke around and see if I can find out anything.

The Yamaha guy is in all the time.

Certaimly sounds doable, especially from Yamaha.

It makes sense for Yam to do it.

Correction on the L4 Verado 200 though - it does not weigh 635lbs, it weighs 510lbs

The 300 HP Subaru is injected and turbo charged. Hardly the case with the Chevy 409. And without a torque curve to view, I would suspect the peak torque on the Subaru is way up in the rpm band.

Why is high RPM bad? Same torque at higher RPM is more horsepower . . . horsepower makes stuff go. If they live, and it's geared/propped right, who cares? Big if's, but . . . Power density is a huge benefit. Blowers deliver that. Good thing.

On a boat I agree. In a car or truck that's not a good thing unless you happen to never tow anything, fuel economy is not an issue, and high rpm performance is your only criteria.

Getting 200 ponies out of a 2.6L block is no great feat of engineering.

Rodbolt makes a very good point though. Getting it to live in a very nasty marine environment will. Especially with questionable fuels and maintenance.

I miss the days where a 200 was 2.4 Liter, weighed less 400#, and didnt mind running in the high 6G's every now and then. Kill a whale, save and outboard.

Well, I gave up waiting and bought a pair of Suzuki 175's 4 cyl 4 stroke no fancy super charger or NOS (kidding) just CC's and a low gear raito.
They did a great job replacing my v6 200hp 2 stroke motors.
