top speed question

I just bought a 2001 trophy 1900 dual console boat, it is similar to the hull on the 1903, 19 feet long, beam 8'2", holds 55 gallons of fuel, It has a 125 Mercury on it with a 19 prop, The motor will turn up to 5200 rpm which is right where it should be. My question is we took it out and I could only get 31 mph top speed out of it. We had a full tank of fuel and total of 3 guys including me the captain (total people weight of 650 lbs) Does this top speed seem right??? The fuel in the boat is from last season but the motor runs smooth and strong and starts ok. Anyone have any input on this? I know this is a heavy boat but I expected high 30's at least. I was trimmed up as high as I could go without cavitating. The motor is set up right on the transom, cavitation plate even with bottom of transom. I measured the speed on my Furuno gps. Thanks

Re: top speed question

That seems a bit slow to me too, I would say more like 35MPH should be WOT.

Re: top speed question

What type of prop? alum? ss? cupped or not? Seems a little slow to me also.
A good cupped ss prop will get you more top speed than an alum prop of the same pitch and dia and hold the water better. Is the hub in good shape and not spinning inside the prop? This can easily be checked next time you hit the water. Use a paint marker to put a line on one of the inner ribs of the prop (where the exhaust exits) all the way accross the locking tab washer, locking tab, nut and shaft. If things dont line up when you come off the water the hub is spinning inside the prop. My prop is marked and it has become a quick check every time I pull her out.

Re: top speed question

top speed on our 2003 1903 is about 33. With a heavy load and normal 2' seas we are in the high 20's This is with a typical load of 3-4 people. It is a completely different boat with just 1 person....
