Got my new to me boat in the lake before winterizing and couldn't seem to get it past 25mph. The throttle would move to 9 oclock before the engine would rev, so I'm pretty sure I need to adjust the throttle/cable. The Tachometer wasn't working so I don't even know how many RPM's I was doing. I'm just wondering what should I expect for a top end with this boat/motor combination? It's 17ft long, What should my top speed and max RPM's be?

It's possible that your boat could hit 40, but I would think 30 to 35 is a bit more realistic. WOT should be between 4,000 and 4,400 RPM.

Several things will affect speed on the water: weight, trim, RPM, propeller pitch, etc., etc. So it's a bit tough to start guessing as to what will help you achieve a higher speed.

My boat is a '72, 17'6", about 2,000# (not including passengers) with a 165 HP spinnin' a 14" x 16p prop. My trim still isn't working, but I get in the low 30s on the top end right now.

Maybe include the year and model.
They made a few different setups.
But 25 is way slow for a 17 with a 120.

Do a compression test.
Spark test.
