The bottom reed block does show a little bit of mushrooming. I will try to get a picture of it tonight. So now I will replace the rollers in the lower bearing but uppers should be OK. Does the reed block need to be replace?

If you find a better one it could be replaced, if you don't... it will probably work fine.....

So where in the world can we get a replacement rod for this sort of rebuild?

All the rest of the stuff seems to be available here on iboats. But I can't seem to find a rod. (Mine broke, and I really appreciate this post and all the photo's and information in here!!)

I'm getting ready to order my parts. Few Questions

-Would you replace all the rings or just the ones with the new piston?
-How many rings do you get in the Sierra ring packs that go for about $16
- Do I need to use a hone in the cylinders to deglaze? Would prefer not to.
- The impeller has never been replaced so I think I should do that now. What parts should I replace along with impeller change?

I would replace all rings, some people choses to only replace the 2 top rings and use 1 old at the bottom ...

I believe they sells one pack pr piston ( 3 rings a pack ).

YES

You will need gaskets for the water pump, but if you're buying a engine gasket kit it's included there..

If you're buying a Sierra kit you might want to purchase a fuel pump kit too, but if you're buying an original Mercury kit... the fuel pump kit are included .

While you're at it...you should replace the top/bottom crankshaft seals too ( NOT included in any kits )

Your best bet is to take everything apart and see what you need. Nothing worse then not having the right things to put the motor back together or 1/2 assing it. Take the head off check cylinder and pistons then see what you have.
I would definitely replace any old gasket while your at it and do a new impeller.
Take a straight edge and a feller gauge and see what you got but the glass and sandpaper trick works well.

If you look back in the thread you will see that the engine is mostly disassembled at this point, still need to open main bearings but I know I am replacing the rollers.
I have opened the crank case and pulled the crank assembly to access cylinders. This engine doesn't have a head. Could you be more specific about glass and sandpaper trick.

As you wroth NO lose head so forget sandpaper trick, carefully remove old gaskets and replace with new ones, handle the 2 block half's with care to keep them damage free .

If it were mine, it would get a light honing, all new rings, and a good cleaning before reassembly.
Look close at all mating surfaces for corrosion too.

No additional parts needed IF the pump housing are undamaged, but you might want to open it and inspect before ordering parts as some part might have corroded ( have had the pleasure to cut of the impeller with a hacksaw because of corrosion ... ).
NO need to remove the lower part of the housing, the part UNDER the stainless steel plate.

Just a little advice at the end.... save all gaskets until you got the replacement, those gasket kits have gasket for multiple models and therefor it's handy to have the old one for comparison ( in short... it's a "one size for all" models kit )

OK I ordered a bunch of parts and set about cleaning things up while I wait for them to arrive. Spent some time inspecting the bearing caps and it looks the the top cap has a section of the bore that has worn away by about 10 thousands of an inch at the worst point. Any way to fix this or do I need to replace it.
