I have a question does anybody know what the torque rating should be for the rod bolts my manual says 42 ft lbs but that seems way to high already snapped one off at the head trying to torque that high. I went by what the manual recommended to torque them both halfway then ? but when I tried 42 that?s when one of them snapped. These are 5/16 bolts. Motor is a 78 evenrude 140 hp. Thanks

I don't have a manual for your motor but 5/16 bolts should be torqued to about 27 ft lbs. Either you are reading it wrong or the book is wrong.

Maybe it's in-lbs, not ft-lbs? I've always used a 3/8" drive in-lb torque wrench on rod bolts.

I don't have the correct manual, but one that I do have says 348-372 inch pounds (29-31 foot lbs). This would be the screws that require a 5/16" 12 point socket. That's what you have, right?
