Torque prop nut?

I've not replaced a prop myself but two of my friends have. One tells me that the nut does not need to be torqued. The other friend says to torque it. Does it need torqued after I install the new prop and if so, how do I find the setting for the torque wrench?

Here is a thread abut prop nut torque . . . it will depend on the motor brand & type, but generally they are in the 50-75 ft-lb range. If it is a Nylock nut, there is less to worry about the nut going loose, but it is nice to have the prop snug and to the specs.

I agree. I've never torqued a prop nut.....

My service manual for a '02 90 Merc, said to torque to 55 ft-lbs. That's far from loose or just snug. You don't want your prop flopping around.
