Torque rec broke my stud!?

So I cleaned my flame arrestor last night with carb cleaner, it worked great (thanks for the tip y'all). But when I went to tighten the nut, I tried to tighten it to 30 lbs, which is what the manual said to do - then the stud broke off in the nut! what gives?

Either a) the stud is old; b) the manual is wrong about the 30 lbs of torque; c) my torque wrench is wrong; or d) I don't know how to use either.

I thought it was getting too tight, and I should have trusted my gut instead of the manual.

Can anyone tell me a) what I did wrong? and b) where to buy another stud?

Engine: 1992 Ford 5.0L OMC cobra 2 bbl carburetor (what does 2 bbl mean?) or model 502BPRAMK

Did it break all the way down inside of the carb?? I always just hand tighten it, I didn't even know there was a torque for a wing nut:)

SELOC manual? 30 ft/lbs is about half of what my prop nut calls for.

30 inch/lbs would be more like it...!

Get a good lawyer.

Back it out and bring it with you, both pieces or just the one piece so you can match the diameter, and measure how long or just bring both, NAPA, Auto Zone, Advanced auto should have it. I took off the nut and use a wing nut now with a washer

Right, okay, I'm still getting straight the parts I can get from an auto parts store and those I have to get at the boat supply store.

2 bbl = a two barrell carb. 4 bbl = a four barrell carb.
