Hi guys, got a qusetion about a motor I don't own or intend to own.

Here's the story, I bought a project boat (needs complete re-build) Boat is a 1970 SeaCraft center console. Boat originally came with what I believe was a 120 Mercruiser (motor and outdrive were removed when I purchased the hull). This is based on the information I've been told by people knowledgeable about these boats, and the fact that once before owned an identical boat (except it was a 1977 model) and it had a 120 Mercruiser.

I plan to convert this boat to an outboard and am trying to determine how much weight was removed, and how much a new outboard will weigh in relation to the old power.

Soooo, my question is, does anyone know off hand, or know where I can find out how much the original engine, outdrive, and all associated hardware weighed ? I've tried Mercury's website with no success, and all the literature I can find for the boat excludes motor weights-only orignal hull weights are given.

Thanks for the help

Re: total engine weight please

In the 2008 Marine Power edition of Trailer Boats Magazine, a 3.0L with an Alpha One Gen 2 drive weighs 635lbs. Considering the 120 is just a 2.5l version of the exact same engine, I'd say that's a pretty good approximation. The Alpha One Gen 2 would weigh a little more than the drive that came out of your boat, but I doubt it would weigh 50lbs more.

Why?

I am yet to see a conversion that has gone without problems or been a complete success....

Most of the time now outboards are coming in '4 stroke' flavour. You would gain nothing by converting, with a very high risk of upsetting the hull dynamics set up by the designer. Stick with the I/O and save a pile of grief and cash. (With the money saved you can afford to replace the aging 2.5l with a nice shiny new 3.0l).....

What is the reason you want to convert? I know that people in salt water areas favor outboards but modern OBs come with a very high price and a conversion is an unknown as far as balance and handling. Properly maintained stern drives can last a very long time. Mine's 24 years old and the engine and drive are original. But all the maintenance has been done, every year.
