I just purchased a Evinrude 20hp outboard and was looking for the manufacture date (Year). All the messagess I've searched, I see that many have referenced http://www.evinrude.com for a table that you could convert a serial number to an embedded year, model and horse power. I was lucky to find the s/n# on the freeze plug s/n# (R8584990). Can someone please tell me where I can desypher this number.

Thanks, Dave

Re: Total Newby, serial number

Thanks JB, I went out and looked over the motor and was unable to find a number that looks like a model #. There is no rivited plate on the mount, although I did find an approx. 1"x2" area on the side of the mount that may had a plate at one time. Is there any other place I can look for the model number?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Total Newby, serial number

i had this same problem with the 92 120j i bought, no id plate - the serial # turned out to be a replacement powerhead #. so i had to use part #s to get me the actual year. using part #s and the "OUTSTANDING HELP" from this site <and others> i found that it was a 1988 evinrude 140tx, with a factory replacment powerhead, that was redone by a shotty mech.
but i only know this for sure because i have it completely tore down and have identified 90% of the parts.
the professionals that take their time to assist you on this site are very good.
one of them gave me this site to help www.boaterssupply.com .now i did have some luck and got someone by chance at the j/e/bomb corp to look up a couple things. i think i got real lucky that day. good luck with your search.

Re: Total Newby, serial number

You speak of experience 2K. It looks like my motor came from the same guy. I took it down to the marina and ask them where the s/n was. They said there are no numbers on this engine and the powerhead had been replaced. So the number on the freeze plug is not even legitimate. Althuogh he could date the engine to around 86' or 87'. So my next question is what is a good manual for this motor (1986 20hp Evinrude outboard)? I see alot of manuals and was wondering if one of those would be good or if I need to by the manual from Evinrude. Thanks a bunch everybodys been much help. dave

Re: Total Newby, serial number

i looked on ebay and bought my parts and service manuals from them. i saved alot of $s. but would stay with the omc ones. i have a clymers that i use only as a reference if i dont understand something. but in general they a vague.
-
its been a frustrating saga with this 120/140 motor.
NO, i only wished i had the knowledge that the professionals that give their advice have.
-
good luck with your search, you will learn alot about that motor if you decide to pursue.
