Re: TOTAL NOVICE needs advice

I bet you would be amazed at how many of us actually followed all those conversations. There are a lot of geeks out there, and we are the ones who like to tinker and fix things. There are two kinds of people, those who understand how everything works, or is willing to try, and those who don't. My guess is that anyone on this board who DOESN'T talk geek, just missed the opportunity by a couple years to get into it. Once you miss the initial wave of exploration, it only gets tougher to self teach your way in.

My son is in college now taking programming classes. I am so sad he never had the opportunity to learn DOS and work with GWBasic and Line Edit. Who remembers how handy F3 was?

You can simplify the instructions and process for your model:

Pull the emergency kill lanyard to supress fire by grounding the powerpacks;

Take out all sparkplugs so that there is no load;

Test each hole being as consistent as possible;

Record the readings for future comparison and troubleshooting.

Cylinders are numbered top to bottom.

I'm assuming you're trying to summarize all the advice in the form of an "idiot's guide" (and I'm saying this not as a disparaging comment, but as the type of idiot who needs it! I've been confused enough by simple instructions to qualify)

It won't crank with the lanyard pulled -therefore you need to add the explanation on how to power the starter directly from the battery.

Also should specify how to "test each hole" by cranking a consistent number of times, and/or crank until the reading on the gauge doesn't rise any more.

Gosh.. if I didn't have a command prompt open in windows I'd be back and forth from "start\run" constantly, wasting precious time. And wasn't F3 (Form Follows Function) not developed by Sun and essentially JavaRE?

As for "tinkering" and "fixing" I get quite good at things but like to practice on smaller models first... or make my own, before going at the full-scale model. But in this case I can't, don't have a spare Engine to mess about with, not like acquiring an obsolete DL360/80 or a nice Poweredge to mess about on, checking teh freq on different DIMMs, how fast can one CPU clock compared with naother, waht happens if you remove a capacitor... oh, right,. yeah, BLUE SCREEN. :D.

I Remember taking my first Digital Watch apart to my mother's horror, and putting it all back together again. I was 8. She freaked, but she was kind of impressed when I took apart an old analogue wind up and replaced the spring-coil and cleaned the cogs and winder to get it working again. It was an old watch I was given by the fisherman next door.

It doesn't take long to understand, but you have to know the basics before you can get more advanced. That's why these forums are great. Some of this is new to me, some I have seen done before, but I learn fast. Really appreciate everyone's input, but keeping it simple is better... just as composed slower actions are faster than hasty ones.

Sometimes I think that these forums can be for those with vast amounts of experience or there is at least an assumption of intermediate knowledge. My knowledge is still only Novice, hence why I need certain things spelt out to me :)

Actually, pulling the lanyard will kill the ignition system, i.e. No spark. Follow JB's instructions to engage the starter to crank the motor.
