Yes i would use tow haul around town. It increases shift rpm, helping to keep the engine in its higher horsepower area, also it increases the vehicle speed at which it shifts helping to avoid lugging. Overdrive is prolonged so fuel economy may be effected but once up to speed you should be fine. TCC will also come in a bit earlier if it can to reduce heat but that depends on many different factors(throttle position, maf reading, map reading). If you have the factory tow package you should already have a sufficient trans cooler installed (you can see it through the grille in front of the a/c condenser) Ill gladly admit im no boat expert but i have been a gm tech for the last 22 years. Just my 2 cents

^^^^^^+1 on this. All the GM trucks I have had with the factory tow package have performed fine(verified with temp gauge) with the factory transmission cooler in front of the radiator.

Adding another cooler in series with the stock cooler will also add some more restriction and could potentially reduce the flow of tran fluid back to the transmission.

I have heard that you want the tran temp to be a minimum of 160?. I have also seen tran coolers that actually have a thermostatic bypass set to that temp so that the cooler won't work until that temp is reached.

Really? well, I guess that makes sense. Transmission fluid is kind of a hydraulic fluid and most hydraulics work better when the fluid is warm. From working around aircraft (MEDEVAC and civilian air rescue choppers) part of the wait getting them off the ground is waiting for fluid to warm up. Kind of like the engine being most efficient when it is at temp to I guess.

That's the type I have fitted. Put it on specifically for when I am pulling the travel trailer (5,000lb ish) works when it needs to. Don't want it working during a Canadian winter !!!
