My tow rig needs new tires. Being this is a TOWING thread I figured it'd fit. If anyone knows I would really appreciate it. I currently have 255 85r16's and I cannot find any. So on craigslist I can get some 265 75r16's and was wondering if these will be okay. The current tires are not hanging over the rims at all and look like they'd fit. What do you think? Thank you.

Re: Tow rig tires.

my trailer came with car tires and rims, took it in to a trailer shop and they pointed out that my rims were incorrect
I got new rims and trailer tires, now the trailer tows much better.
Gave the car tires away in craigslist

Re: Tow rig tires.

Those tires sound like regular truck tires. You need trailer specific tires. Has something to due with the side wall strength. the tires take all the spring from the road. If you use regular radials they could blow sidewalls out. I beleive they should be (just as an example) ST205/75D14. So I beleive yours would be ST255/85D16. Also as CC mentioned take it to a trailer shop and they can tell you if you have regular truck rims on it. ST=special trailer D= bias ply

If they are P265 they are car tires. Trailer tires have a heavier sidewall for better control with heavier or taller loads. Check the load rating. 265 series will be slightly wider and 75 series will be a bit lower in height.

I am in the TOWING forum, and I don't know about you, but I tow my boat with a truck not by hand. Hence why I asked the question.

Re: Tow rig tires.

ok, so you're on a boating forum to ask about your truck?
makes sense you got advice on your boat trailer then haha

that was explained in his first sentence.

it should be alright, but its hard to tell with out more info on the tow rig, and what you are towing. i would imagine u want at least load range D on any tow rig.

265/75/16's should fit but they are 1.5" smaller in diameter and .4" wider. The smaller diameter is going to throw your speedometer off by about 5% If it's a newer vehicle the dealer can reprogram the computer for the different tire size.

A better size would be 285/75/16's. Your speedometer will be off less than 1% and they are readily available.

Sorry must have had a brain fart on my first response. I agree with The Kid. Use the 285/75/16.

Re: Tow rig tires.

from the moment I read the first post, I knew he was talking about his truck, to me a tow rig means what pulls the Trailer, not the trailer.

We have plenty of discussions on here about towing, and the trucks that tow them.

This might help. The specs will apply to make, not just BFG.
