I see 3", 2 1/2", and 2 3/8". Why the differences? Multiple rope uses? What is recommended and are there any reasons other than preference to select one over the others?

Thanks!

Re: Tow ring size question

What are you using it for, there are 3 persons tubes to single person tubes, wakeboards and skiing, If your going to put alot of stress, like say, for a 3 man tube then I would go a little heavier, depends on what your using it for.
A heavier one wouldn't hurt, that way you can use it for what ever purpose.

Isn't the metal thickness the same on them, but only the diameter of the ring different? Does that change the strength? Anyone know which size usually comes pre-installed on boats from the factory?

Re: Tow ring size question

i believe 3" or 3 1/2" is standard...... ill measure it in a few min. for sure. bayliners come with a cleat back there...can u believe that??? a cleat....wow. anyways, one of the first things i upgraded on the boat.

EDIT: mine is 2 1/2". seems to be normal, doesnt look too small or anything. also, it matched the existing holes from removing the cleat, thats why i went with it. now i remember lol.

the metal thickness increases with increasing ring diameter.

Re: Tow ring size question

redone - Your ring is top side then? Don't have a quick photo, do you?

I'm putting this one on a '97 Capri and debating the locations (top side vs back side of transom). I wasn't sure if one had less strain on the attachment point than the other (even with a backing plate).

smokingcrater - thanks! I did find a spec where it showed the thickness. The smaller were 3/8" and the larger 1/2". Some diameters of the ring stayed the same and only the thickness changed.

no pics of the stern, sorry. if i had my camera with i would snap one for ya but its at home. Mine is mounted vertical on the transom in a factory reinforced spot, just behind the engine cover. basically its mounted how you see 90% of them on the newer boats.
