Tow Trailer Question??

Hello,

I have a 19' aluminum Bluefin Sportsman that has a 2.3 Ford and OMC outdrive. The boat is listed weighing @ 1700 #'s. I have the good fortune of having two trailers for this boat. Trailer #1 is pretty basic, has bunks and weighs @ 500 #. Trailer #2 has slightly larger wheels, has rollers, surge brakes and weighs @ 700 #'s .

I would like to sell one of the trailers but do not know which would be better for trailering. Do you think the heavier, larger trailer with surge brakes would be better overall than the smaller lighter weight more basic trailer? I usually trail short distances but every summer I take my boat to the Mts which is about a 400 mi trip one way and on some rough dirt roads.

Regardless of boat weight, if I had a choice between a trailer with brakes and one without brakes the brakes win every time, by a mile.

While you are under the weight at which NYS requires trailer brakes with either (3000# gross weight), your tow vehicle manufacturer may have a lower limit in their towing recommendations. Regardless, I agree with JB's post 100%.

Defintely keep the one with bigger tires and brakes. Big tires make a huge difference on long trips, because the bearings dont spin as fast. And for towing in the mountains, brakes are a good thing.
