towboats told me to take my business to sea tow, they don't provide service on the Hudson river. except to reimburse the bill paid for a dispatch to their competitor. Didn't want that hassle or jeopardy of a 1500+ tab.

At least you have coverage, that's the main thing.

the Hudson is so pretty, and there is a lot of boats, and a lot of remnants of what use to be a really busy recreation industry before, maybe with the river becoming clean again, people will take up boating again on it. from where I live its the best bet for me. about a 90 minute run to either the statute of liberty, or newburgh which is upstate, wide and deep, scenic, and not too much commercial.
but there are some stretches that even seatow doesn't have a franchise. fortunately, coast guard, and local sheriff's do cover, and commercial traffic go all the way up to troy dam, where the tide ceases. and the Erie canal begins.
