Okay, I have been on holiday for a week and while away I went out on my friends boat. A 23' cabin cruiser.
It was around 5pm last wednesday. There was 6 of us. We get to the dock and launch the boat.
First of all, the motor which puts the leg down, broke.
So, we have a 2004 8hp 4 stroke Yamaha we figured we would use to cruise around with. At least we might be able to go fishing.
Did I mention that we were on the Fraser River(the currents are probably around 10-15 knots)
Only thing is...the kicker does not have a tiller handle, so we install our redneck piece of 2x4 to it with duct tape. You know where this is going.
We get the kicker fired up and head on out into the Fraser at full speed(just a bit faster than the current is). We decide it is better to go upstream first since all we had was the kicker.
Trying to go upstream with 6 people in a 23' cruiser, against the current, using a 2x4 as a steering mechanism. Ummm...yeah.
It was VERY hard to keep it in a straight line, very hard.
So, for 1/2 hour we are going upstream, or at least trying to and I look over at the shore...we probably travelled about 1 mile.
All of a sudden the high tech steering mechanism we had, broke off and now we have to steer by leaning over the back of the boat and holding the motor cover.
Back and forth in a zig zag line, all over the place. It was crazy.
At that time I asked my bud if he had enough life jackets aboard(I was getting a bit weary now).
He has 4 life jackets and there are 6 of us aboard
About 2 minutes later, the river patrol cruised up to us and asked if we had a problem. We told them about the main motor not working and the makeshift tiller handle breaking off.
They decided it was best if they towed us in. We all agreed.
I think next time I will take my own boat out instead. What a day!

Sorry, I thought I had posted this in SHT's. Mod...can you move it..thanks.

Glad you made it back...

Now the next question is... Why the h*ll did you even bother getting on the boat after knowing it was broke in the first place?

WOW !

I could see MAYBE making your red-neck repairs on a lake, but not on a river... or ocean.

SHHEESSHHH!!!

Hope ya'all learned a valuable lesson here!

H.

Gee Chris, I just have to ask the obvious. I followed your post about being Canadian, and thought some of the replies from your Yankie friends slightly......well...tough. I was actually thinking of supporting you at one point, but hearing your story above,......just what can I say. :D
Good to see you all made it back, and better still, being reminded or told of others errors makes me more cautious.
Thanks for posting it, and I mean that.
Cheers
Phillip

brother chris,

I won't stick my finger in your eye because something similar happended to me once.

My brother got a new electric kicker so we took his john boat down to the local river and we took the battery out of his Volkswagen. We decided to drift down stream while drift fishing with the intention of using the electric kicker to take us back up stream. The current was very slow and gentle (South Georgia, U.S.A.)

His trolling motor was a 35hp 12 volt... but little did we know that his old volkswagen was a 6 volt system. Boy did we have a long walk back.

So I know how dissapointed (notice I didn't say the "S" word) you felt.

We have both added another chapter to our "Lessons Learned" book of life.

OMG.
Lesson learned I'm sure!
My theory is that you're only a dunce if you make the same mistake twice (or more). Glad everyone's ok.

Re: towed back in...via police

Well, first of all, I did not know there was not enough life jackets until we were already out on the water. My friend has been boating for sometime now. He knows better about life jackets. I guess he was in a hurry to get out on the water.
The reason I did go...was because I just spent $40 on my tidal fishing license(with a salmon tag) and I really wanted to go out and catch some fish.
It was safe, except for the lack of life jackets(and...okay...maybe the steering).
I'm taking my boat next time!

Exactly Ken is right, more Duct tape. My buds and I chartered a off shore fishing trip out of Galveston. We arrived and were ready to go and the captain said his motor was acting up. Lifted cowl saw water and said no. He still wanted us to go out as he THOUGHT it would be ok. Be careful Chris.

Wow, a duct tape failure while underway ? What do you use to repair duct tape ?  Perhaps a question to pose to Red Green. Did you get fined ? Here in Ontario it is an automatic fine for not having enough jackets aboard and thats the FIRST thing that is checked for. Glad it all worked out in the end.

No fines. I was extremely surprised that they never even came aboard to check the boat out for safety regs and such.
BTW. I emailed Red, lets see what his response is  :D

Wow! I'm surprised that 8hp Yamaha even moved the boat. My 16'5" Lund (aluminum) with 8merc. kicker will stay exactly even with the current in the colorado river about 25 miles upstream from Lake Havasu (Arizona). At least you got back safe and sound.

Sprouticus: Never heard of any kind of rule like that. It is a fast running river, that is for sure.
The coast guard never mentioned anything about the size of the motor either. Oh well.
