but all the stuff you guys list seems like a little much for such a short trip,

most accidents happen within 1/2 mile from home.

thats becuase you drive within a 1/2 mile the most, and what does that have anything to do with all the preperation for the trip he is going to be doing?

All i can say is my bearings have lasted between 1 and 9 years with yearly matiance

I got caught off guard this spring when a 9 month old seal failed and did some water dammage to the inner bearing

I have a marine store on every corner down here and its still much easery to just have the basic stuff with you instead of leaveing the trailer on the road side (which i see at least once a week ) and chaseing down parts

Jaymasta, perfect eh? hmmm...crystal ball sees cousin leaving boat on side of road one day. But do me a favor, give me a call when he's on the road. I don't want to be driving when he's towing a boat with a 150 on a Glastron WITHOUT a transom saver. If anyone needs one, it's your cousin.

thats your opinion....the boat is like 20 years old or more, and it runs awesome, 45mph, skis/fishes lakes/ocean takes it in the ocean almost every weekend for fishing and I have taken a GOOD close look at the transom both from inside and out, and it shows absolutly no wear or damage that I can see....

Re: towing my boat on vacation

Confusing about the engine bouncing up 4" upon hitting a bump in the road.

My engine doesn't do that. It rides right with the trailer, locked in tight. I trim it up till the front of the skeg (the area below the gearbox bulge) is parallel to the road which is about a 30 degree angle back from vertical. That gives me road clearance for all but the worst of conditions and there I'd just feel my way thru the obstacle; or tilt it up some more.

It's a 3 cylinder and seems to have a good balance between engine wt and lower unit. Now if I had an I6 Merc tower and had it all the way up on the tilt bracket without PTT then I'd definitely use the transom saver.

I have a transom saver but recently decided it was a waste of time to use it.......as long as my PTT was operating correctly.

Mark,

You got me thinking. The motor must have bounced that high since the transom is clamped to the trailer. I'll check to see how much force is required to move the motor upward and report back what I find.

The reason I will use mine is the force moment arm is reduced when the lower section of the engine is supported. Vibrations will always be transmitted up to the motor and if it is supported by the upper 1/3, then it will impart more force onto the transom than if the hard connection is at the bottom of the motor. Simple lever.
