Re: Towing with jeep

It WILL suck, not only to pull but to stop. The brakes in the Grand Cherokee are notoriously weak, it's still a relatively short wheelbase and definitely needs a WD hitch. The motor is willing, but the wheelbase is just too damn short for a 25' long 5000 lb trailer even tho Jeep says it's OK. Look in your Owner's manual, you'll also see maximum trailer lengths specified. I've had two Cherokees and a Grand and they'll pull anything to about 40 then the fun kicks in. My dog hauler is a 2000 4.0 Cherokee rated to 5000 lbs. Absoultely horrible tow vehicle over 2500 lbs. It will move my boat around the house but no way I'm hitting the highway with it. Jeep tow capacities are a JOKE! Remember there hasn't been up until now (2011) a standard for tow capacities and it's still on a voluntary compliance.

Re: Towing with jeep

like I said, I have no trouble using my Jeep after my modifications. I drive on the highway at 70 mph no problem, but I do live in TX where the roads are flat. I would be screwed if I had to climb a hill or mountain.

I've towed our boat (about 3,000lbs total) with the wife's 04 grand cherokee laredo 4.0L 4wd. It gets the job done, not a white knuckle experience by far.. We have no trailer brakes and i've never felt that I needed them but my complaint with the GC is the lack of power with the inline 4.0, and it gets 11mpg towing. Ick.

Re: Towing with jeep

What exactly are we talking about towing that is 25 Ft long? My 19FT on the trailer is 23-24ft I bet. Is that how you are measuring?

The Tahoe I use also has very soft brakes but having Disc's on the trailer make a WORLD of difference! I can stop nearly as confident with the boat as I can unloaded.

If it is the boat in your picture, I dont think a WD hitch is necessary... I'm willing to bet that Jeep tow capacity is calculated assuming a 500+lb tongue requires WD and most boats are under since the weight is in the rear.

A WD hitch would be a total waste for a 200 Horizon. I pulled a Sea Ray 200 Select (much heavier) and a Cobalt 232 which is a 25' 1" and 6200 on the trailer with my 4Runner. Don't waste your money!

Re: Towing with jeep

Sorry. I was just hoping that he didn't listen to all the costly suggestion people gave him considering I've towed a boat heavier than his for 6 years with two very similar vehicles. Who cares if it doesn't have a bed and a truck frame. He's pulling a light 20ft bow rider that is hundreds of pounds less than my old Sea Ray. The funny thing was I towed the 232 Cobalt at first and didn't think it stopped nearly as well as my old boat. Funny thing was the brakes weren't working at all. Did it stop. Yes, surprisingly well even though it was 6200. Now it stops on a dime. It doesn't take a semi, air bags,or WD hitch to pull his boat. Just trying to help the guy. My bad.......
