Re: Towing with my F150

Well Looking at the specs on my truck.... Front GAWR - 3100 Rear GAWR - 3200 GVWR 6000 lbs H9 axle...with a super cab..and 9 times out of 10 I fuel up right before I get to lake, and I dont have that much gear....a inflatable, a cooler and me in the truck with a full tank of a gas and maybe one other person. So I guess we can all agree to disagree. We shall see..i will let you know how i do this weekend.

OK, so you have a Supercab with an H9 axle. According to the data provided above, you have a tow rating of 3,300 pounds - nearly twice what you are likely to be towing with your boat/motor/trailer combination.

I'd say you are fine and that your won the bet too.

Incidentally, try looking up the combined gross vehicle weight rating on your truck. Its probably quite a bit higher than the GVWR of 6,000 pounds. That's exactly what I was getting at in my previous post. If your CGVWR is say, 8,000 pounds, and your truck weighs 3,000 pounds empty, that means you can handle 5,000 pounds between the boat and whatever you put in the truck. Once again, however, your vehicle is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds with the auto tranny, so you are not weight limited by frame, brakes, etc. What this means is that Ford has under-rated the truck in terms of towing. No surprise there, because this is very common and Ford isn't the only one doing it.

I have asked many people this question and nobody I have asked has said anything to the negative side about it....and my wife tells me to stop worrying about..because its just getting me paranoid. LOL and maybe she is right...but thanks for all the input. I will be safe towing and boating!! :)

I should have made my post more clear. I don't disagree with you at all and think you will be alright, I was just trying to point out that the ratings were lower with the 5-spd.

I have asked many people this question and nobody I have asked has said anything to the negative side about it....
The only negative thing I can think of in your case is if you have the 3.08 axle. If you do, you can burn the clutch even at lower weights because the 3.08 is just the worst towing ratio imaginable with your 5-spd. Also, never tow in 5th gear. Did you get a chance to look at the axle code on the door sticker?

We shall see..i will let you know how i do this weekend.
Have a great time!

There is only one other factor to look at.

How much beer are you going to take with you.

I don't think you will have a problem. If you wont to be on the safe side get your boat on a scale. On the plus side tell your buddy's that don't believe you that they have to stay home because of the extra weight. Have fun :)

Re: Towing with my F150

Well there is a problem then...I will have to count down on my beer...:(..LOL..I have a 3.55 gear ratio..which is good and i have hauled about 4 truck loads full of wood when the axle was on the bumper stops..i know hauling and towing are 2 different things...but i do agree..with a manual there is a less tow ratio than automatic. But damn..i have to leave some beer at home...that sucks..and I'm pretty good with a 5-speed.

Since your better half is confident about towing with your F150, but you are not...let her drive and sit in the back where you can bale if necessary...just keep the insurance topped out.
