Re: Towing with no cover

Full mooring covers can also be used while towing if designed correctly with good tight tie downs and reinforcements sewn in on all areas which contact cleats and windshield.

Here is a cover I made for my boat. I made it to tow with but still prefer my snap in cover for my towing since the snap in cover is a smaller package to deal with when i arrive at my destination.

I was toying with the idea of making a mooring cover for my boat. Did you do it from scratch without any instructions? I ordered a Sailrite catalog with the intention of maybe buying materials from them. Anything you could do for pointing me to anything that helped you would be appreciated.

My mom was a seamstress so I learned how to sew from her. She also made hundreds of boat covers so she showed me how she did it.

I also bought my own commercial sewing machine. Although people have sewn canvas with home sewing machines, I highly discourage it. This is the machine I have:

I have done a number of boat covers and have spent quite a bit on equipment besides the sewing machine itself. For example, a heat cutter that cuts the Sunbrella so that it doesn't fray was over $200. If it is your only cover, I would suggest just paying someone to make you one.

typically i don't tow with the mooring cover on. Puffs up like a balloon. Its fine if you have the bow cover bimini and back cover on with might boat it tows fine. Now just dont do what i did and tow with the bimini and the back cover on, no mooring cover, the bimini came unsnapped and ripped up the interior on the sides. thanfully i had the hooks attached or it would have flew off the boat. Also had a grease cap fall off the axle that day too.

as far as the engine cover coming off it gets wedged between the seats and is fairly heavy.

Bruceb58, it looks like you shoved that sewing machine into my garage. I even had to take a quick look for it.

If you have a cover properly made for towing there's nothing wrong with it. Most people (especially in these fishing forums) have never even seen a properly made towable cover.

Re: Towing with no cover

I have custom bow and cockpit covers made by Mark's Custom Canvas here locally. (unsolicited plug cuz he really does good work). I always take them off before trailering down to the marina. All of my seat cushions and rear sunpad/engine cover have snapdown straps to keep them in place... guess Glastron had already thought of this problem. The only thing I've lost going to the coast or lakes is a towel we forgot to put away. Stow anything that is loose or lightweight before taking off if you don't want to deal with covers going to and from your fave water.
