First and foremost!!!!!!! This is not to be another Toyota bash thread!!!!!!!!
The only reason I bring up Toyota is because the "sticking gas pedal" thing is starting to look like its a problem with the fly by wire system.

I wanted to ask/poll everyone how they feel about fly by wire as a technology as a whole, and do you feel safe/comfortable with it?

For those who don't know much about the technology, i'll explain without rambling on.

For the last 100 years, and still today, many a car is shipped with a standard throttle cable. You push on the gas pedal, which in turn pulls an old fashion cable that opens up the throttle. When you let off the pedal, a combination of springs closes the throttle and allows the gas pedal to return.

Fly by wire technology. You push the gas pedal down, there is a potentiometer (variable resistor) that changes the voltage output from the pedal, and sends a signal to the cars ECU. Depending of the return voltage (or signal) from the pedal to the ECU, in return the ECU sends a certain amount of voltage to the throttle body and tells it to open or close a certain amount.

With cable technology, if the gas pedal is somehow stuck, you can reach down with your foot (or hand) and grab the pedal and pull it up, which will close the throttle (barring a snapped cable + frozen springs scenario... which is like 10,000,000 to 1 odds)

With fly by wire, if there is a short circuit, a voltage drop, an ECU malfunction... ect Your essentially putting the throttle in the hands of the car, and not of your own.

So how do you all feel about it as a technology? Safe? Unsafe? Not sure yet?

Fire away.... and please keep the replies toyota free unless it somehow specifically relates to the company.

Mods.... please do not delete but edit if you see it fit to do so.

It's just some more stuff that can go wrong, and apparently does.

I have a FBW throttle on my 03 Avalanche. 110K miles and no problems at all! I was worried about what would happen if the ECM quit and I had to drive it home though, but have yet to encounter it.

Call me old fashioned but give me a cable, return springs and linkages.

Ayuh,.... Hi JJ,.. My old 96 Ford powerstroke is drive by wire,...
It scared me at 1st, because I'd Never like the way Ford wires their rigs,... Had problems over the years with Ford wiring, dating back to 63...
At alittle over 200,000, on the PS,.... No problems,... yet...

1st time I heard of DbW,... Late 80s/ early 90s,... An ole Bud bought a Brand New Pete with a Monster Cat motor....It was a DbW,....
I know Billy put well over 1,000,000 miles on it before tradin'... No problems...

Besides,... It ain't a question of whether you Like it or Not....
'cause, you're Gonna get it, if not now, Soon...

Unfortunately, watching the Toyota meetings,.... People are just plain ole STUPID....
In these horror stories,..... Nobody, but Nobody is Smart enough to Switch Off the Key....

How about planes?

And why does everyone say turn the key off with an unintended acceleration issue. That is the WRONG thing to do. You should put the vehicle in neutral, pull to the side of the road and then, only then, do you turn the ignition key off, unless you want to lose power steering and power brakes.

I thought everyone was taught this when they learned to drive. I didn't have driver's ed, but was taught anyway. Everyone I know who did have drivers ed was taught this as well.

I prefer cables over FBW, and I like older vehicles so I will most likely always have cables.
My wife is on her 2nd 4runner and they have provided us with many trouble free miles. They aren't part of the recall either.

Ayuh,... If the horse is tryin' to drag the wagon, Full Tilt,...
I'll Shoot the horse...turn the key Off....
I can use P/Bs without the help,+ I can turn the steering wheel without help too....

If you don't feel safe about FBW then you should never EVER get on a commercial air plane or a cruise ship.

Re: Toyota, Fly by wire, How do you feel about the technology????

I guess I have driven several megamiles in my time, including about 300,000 in my Mercedes MLs, which are FBW throttled.

I have had two events of loss of throttle control, both in mechanically operated throttled cars/trucks.

The throttle return spring in my 1954 Ford broke and she went to full throttle. I turned off the key and stopped (neither power brake nor steering). Got home by replacing the broken spring with half a dozen rubber bands.

The throttle pedal on my 1987 Ford Ranger got stuck under the aftermarket floor mat. Had PB and PS, but turned off the key anyway.

I completely overlooked the opportunity for my 15 minutes of infamy if I sued Ford for either (or both) events. :(

No problem with it all...I figure if you don't believe in that technology then you shouldn't believe in electronic fuel injection, or air bags, or anti-skid/lock brakes or etc;)

You can't admit the way I said it is correct? You're just funny, Ayuh! ;)

You call people stupid who don't turn the ignition off, I call people stupid who can't find neutral. Who would want their 100 lb. wife trying to fight their steering or brakes with no power capability.

The only throttle issue I can remember was with a Dodge Cummins and the throttle linkage fell apart. The engine went to idle, thank goodness.

I've had 2 instances where a car took off on me. Both were due to me having done something stupid while doing some minor work (once I replace my plug wires but left the rubber boot that covered the distributor lying on top of the engine, don't recall what I did the other time).

Both times I turned the key off, coasted to the side of the road, fixed the problem and got on my way. I guess it could have been worse had I been in traffic, but no big deal either time.

Wouldn't want my engine to over-rev that badly. If it's taking off in gear, the motor will go nuts out of gear.

Rather turn it off.

2 different issues. DBW can be done without what you describe and what you describe can be done regardless of DBW.

pilots dont usually track mud and salty slush into the cockpit, as well the throttle is a stick (I think in most cases) not a floor mounted pedal were its susceptable to all the moisture on the floor.

I'm trying to picture how ABS works on a plane while flying??? :D Oh, I forgot about the Harrier, F-35 and that new Russian Fighter.

FBW is the present and future. I think that we need to accept it. The technology is well proven. Just keep the Chinese out of our cars, too many short cuts and BIG product recalls.

Re: Toyota, Fly by wire, How do you feel about the technology????

I like the cable setup myself but the FBW is on about all vehicles now.
As far as the Onstar....Yea they can shut your car off if they want.It has been that way since Onstar was first put on vehicles.
We have one GM vehicle with it.It even emails me once a month to tell me if any engine problems exist,or the oil needs changed, low tire pressure,ect...
For the most part the newer technology is a good thing..
