Wouldn't want my engine to over-rev that badly. If it's taking off in gear, the motor will go nuts out of gear.

Rather turn it off.

Blowing the motor is better than the potentially devastating alternative. IMO

If any of you haven't read the poll numbers yet... some of you are okay with FBW/DBW but 50% of you have indicated you would prefer an old fashion cable.


My car has a regular old cable. The engine is pretty tuned and beefy, if you so much as blow on the gas pedal the motor rev's right up. My Katies car has FBW (both cars are subarus), and there is a "lag" or delay in the pedal. It drives me nuts when I drive it. Both cars are standard transmissions. When I touch my pedal the engine reacts, instantly. With Kates car when I touch the pedal there is a .250 (a guess here) of a second delay, drives me nuts.

So you'd rather crash into another car or drive off an embankment. The CHP who died along with his family tried in vain to turn his off(it had pushbutton start) if he'd of thrown it in neutral they'd all still be here.

I wonder if the problems with FBW in cars is the same as why they tell you to turn off cell phones and wifi toys in airplanes?with cell phones getting more powerfull ,could they be messing with the sensors in the car?

As I understand it, the reason they tell you to turn off telecom devices on planes so they don't interfere with communication between the plane and control tower. Cellphones are weaker now then the old analog cellphones of the past. Modern cellphones emit far less rf energy then the old ones.

Cars with the push button typically RFID keys that only have to be near the car in order to work. You don't even have to put them in the ignition. Just get in the car and press the button. (kinda dumb I know)

I recently had a problem with rapid acceleration ... not sure why ... but in the 1/2 a second I had in reverse to recognize what was happening till I was stopped by the tree, there wasn't much time to do anything. I wish I had put the car in neutral, or turned off the key, but till I realized it wasn't the anti-lock brakes working on ice, etc, it was too late. Made matters worse I was in reverse.

Sometimes the element of surprise doesn't give you time to react. Now, going down the road and having time to talk on your cell phone, that should give you plenty of time to put the car in neutral, turn it off, or whatever needs done to get your vehicle under control. But each case is different. Before judging someone as stupid, you need to understand fully what was happening at the time.

Now, to answer the question. I am somewhat comfortable with the FbW or DbW, whichever you want to call it, but if I had a choice, I would chose the mechanical throttle cable.

I agree with you, people AE stupid and should be able to figure out some method of stopping a car with the engine running away

And come on, don't you known that pushbutton start looks cool and makes you an official race car driver

Has anybody noticed that the folks that are holding hearings, and generating big recall news from management way above the usual Transportation Safety structure and procedure, all work for the competition?

I think this is all going to fall out as screaming sales for Toyota, for the same reasons that Ford sales are screaming. Superior product, and a vote against GM.

I don't really expect the hypersensitive board censors to leave this post here long, but it needs to be said.

I'm ok with it.

My Titan's throttle is FBW also. One thing about these systems is you don't always get WOT even though the pedal is on the floor. For example, in my truck there is a delay before you feel the G forces if you stomp it. I think it depends on what rpm the engine is turning. From a dead stop there's definitely a delay before you feel the power. Those that drag race this truck make changes to the ECU programming so that it does WOT as soon as you stomp it. Other vehicles probably work this way too but I don't know for sure.

Fly by Wire ? My main pet peeve against DRIVE by wire system is I cannot goose the throtle from under the hood, Not working on many Camries but newer Stangs and such.

I prefer a cable over a linkage and prefer a linkage over a drive by wire.
Those computer I/O switches are kinda ridiculous, prefer my ole' column mounted key and as a 30 year old male I got no problem banging neutral (its a simple push on most shifters)
Also I can steer and brake with the power assist off, I understand 96 year old blue haired grandmaw cannot react near as fast as a 30 year old gearhead who is uses to driving many junks and other mediocre brakeless equipment and what not. STUPID GRANDMAW.

As for Yota getting beat up by EDIT and all the other claims Toyotas own guy is saying the bad quality in their later models cars is because Yota grew to fast in the US.
Many saw this coming, Yotas cheerleaders told us we were all stupid and jealous.
