Couple of Dallas suburbs (Plano and I forget the other) are installing cameras at intersections to photograph license plates & send citations to registered owners of vehicles running a red light.

How in blazes are they planning to prove that I am guilty of the infraction they're charging me with? There's no law making a vehicle owner responsible for any vehicle other than the one he's driving at the time.

Much as I hate red-light-runners, I hate this even more.

No dif than the cameras yall got over there that focus on a lane and give speeding tickets by mail. I had one of thoes mailed to me ,Dallas I think, Ihad hell beating it , and I had not owned that vechicle for 2 months prior to the ticket. They thought I was lieing to them I had to provide proof of sales to them.

Its more than likely the same system that the NTTA (tollway) uses.

They proposed the same thing for here in downtown Cincinnati. The councilman said it was going to "deter red light infractions". However, not 3 days later, one of the female councilpersons shot her mouth off about how much revenue it was going to generate. Wellll, it got a lot of local press and some scrutiny and the law department warned the council of shaky ground regarding these. It was dropped due to the certainness of getting sued.

It was all about money, not safety. They knew it, they lied about it, it got exposed and it got ditched. Good riddance.

UFM82

jtexas, they have written the ordinance as a violation of the owner having auto that runs the light. It is less than ticket if cop catches you. Just plain wrong, me thinks.

i think that in keeping the penality low to begin with, they are hoping that very few will bother to refute the evidence.
An effective way to raise revenue at low cost to the city no doubt.

It's all about the MONEY!

I know the pinheads will trot out every reason under the sun to explain the "safety" benefits, but they speak with a forked tongue.

Safety is a big concern with running red lights, but the camera thing is out of line.

I have been argueing against this since they started doing it years ago. The vehicle is not running the light, the owner may not even be in the same country. Responsibility should be with the driver, and cameras don't prove that!

Not sure what you guys mean about driver, or owner accountability. The cameras here take a picture of the driver and of the plate and the light. If the driver cannot be identified in the photo, the charge is dropped. The city of Scottsdale is somewhat of a pioneer when it comes to camera inforcement. They have red light cameras, mobile van cameras that issue speeding tickets by mail. They just installed the first ever speed enforcement cameras on a state highway. I don't see it as a money making venture. I see lots of idiot drivers running red lights, speeding, crashing, and just plain being stupid, and I think the cameras are a good idea.

Drowned Rat, what do you think the driver should be doing when he comes up to a red light or an accident blackspot? Watching the road or looking out for a camera?

We've had speed cameras and traffic light cameras over here for 10 years or more. The government has recently been forced to admit that they don't actually make any difference to accident rates(their own figures proved this) , and the populace sees them as yet another tax on the motorist. Resist them as hard as you can.

We have some of them in the county that I live .The ones hare are put in by a private company and the fine is split between the city and the private company. Strictly a money grab in my opinion.

Lets see if you do not run the red light no ticket. Where's the problem. Unless the time the yellow stays on is shortened. I believe they did that in DC>

We have them. The fine is accompanied by a photo, of you behind the wheel and your registration. Bingo.
We know where they are and make very sure we don't run the red.
Yes, they are a money making venture, but the rules are simple. Don't run a red and you won't have a problem.
Cheers
Phillip

They just talked about this on the news last night. D.C. reported a little over $3 million in revenue from the cameras.
